Well.....I say 40' and 50's most likely. They kept them in the hospital for a good 2 weeks. I know when I had my first child....I was out of the hospital and going to my Chiropractor for an adjustment when she was 2 days old. There were some elderly ladies in there that were shocked I was out and about in such a short time. They told me I should be home in bed and were amazed how cruel it was to put you out of the hospital so quickly. Couldn't beleive I had it natural either. They gave them some gas or something they called "twilight". Didn't like the idea of having a husband in the room either....They kept looking at my daughter because they said they never remembered really seeing their babies when they were that little. I mean women have been birthing babies forever so it's not an illness. I wanted to have mine at home but I had the RH factor and epilepsy so it was too risky. I think when they figured there was big bucks to be made from a natural event.....hospital births became almost mandatory.

The custom became widespread during and after World War II, but even before that time there were "lying in" hospitals for birthing and natal care, and "health resorts" that were not full fledged hospitals, but more like a women's health center.

Before the 1940's, many women preferred to give birth at home, with the assistance of midwifes, but the living conditions in cities often made it difficult for the mother and the family. Home birthing remained a more common practice in rural areas than in cities. During the 1960's, many "hippies" and back to nature types opted for home births. That practice has diminished because most young mothers want the availability of medical care if anything goes wrong in the process of giving birth.

My guess would be about 45 years ago. But Im sure there were still babies being born at home for people who didnt have money for dr. Also some women still give birth at home. With midwifes. What does this have to do with immigration? MYTH: illegals go to illegal unlicensed medical clinics run by unlicensed quacks because they have no other alternative and because they are afraid of being deported.

TRUTH: Illegals know that they won't be deported simply for seeking medical help -- thousands go for free medical help every day. Obviously, the thousands of illegals who give birth in our county hospitals do not seem to be worried about deportation after their free delivery. The real reason many unsophisticated Hispanic illegals don't go to "free" medical facilities is because they actually trust "curanderos" ( type of witch doctors popular in Mexico) over licensed medical doctors.
