By the time they were 18 months. Hold a spoon in the air and see what hand the child uses to grab it ! Whatever hand he/she uses it most likely which one he will use for everything .

I did a simple test. I held out a toy or snack a little bit off to the left side to see if she would grab it with her left or right hand. Then I repeated it with the right side. My daughter is right handed b/c she tried to reach for it both times with her right hand more. I tested her when she was 12 months old.

Grandfather, here! Children may use both hands, as they're starting out. Gradually, you'll see them using one certain hand. Don't encourage either side. They'll choose which one they want. Your Mother did the same for you. Congrats! You may get a little hint, by getting them to grip two of your fingers. The one that they grip the tighhtest? Is probably one that they'll use.

Babies show preferences as infants, but it usually changes when they get a little older. Usually by the time the child is feeding themelves with a spoon (18 months) you'll know which hand they prefer.

Children's brains are not developed enough to show hand dominance until 3 or 4 years of age.

Well if you want to find out then just look at what hand she uses to write and eat with. That would be her main hand.

you probably won't definitely know until she goes to school. I thought my daughter would be a lefty and I think she may be, but her school has trained her to write with her right hand, but for everything else she does, eat, pick things up, etc. she uses her left hand.

start by handing them a pen, pencil and seeing what they write with. Hand them an object and see what hand they use the grab the object. She may be ambidexrious.
