Im going to go to a dentist where they do sedation dentistry and I was wondering what all do they do after they give the pills (valium) to you? do they still give you the shots as normal or is there a different procedure? also, I have taken valium before for anxiety and im afraid that they wont give me enough due to my high tolerance of medicine. Pretty much im looking for a lot of basic info and experiences about the whole sedation thing because im terrified of the dentist from a previous bad experience with one. also if anyone has a better suggestion than sedation im open to anything right now. Thanks to all whose helpful.

Just to give you some background info I will tell you that I was so terrified of the dentist that I couldn't even make my own appointment, my daughter in law had to do it for me. I was so scared that I was crying in the waiting room - I'm 52 years old by the way! The dentist she found for me was a Sedation Dentist and he gave me a pill in the waiting room and another 45 minutes later, by which time I really didn't care anymore, and I can tell you that it was an outstanding experience. For the first time in my life I am now able to go to a dentist without fear. I also had taken valium in the past without any noticable effects, but the pill the dentist gave me (I believe it was Xanax-same family of drugs as valium) really made me groggy to the point that I really didn't care much what he did! I had the usual shots to numb my mouth after the pills took effect. I truly didn't feel a thing and to be honest I don't remember too much about the whole experience either. I know that some dentists will give you a whiff of gas also if it's needed, mine didn't but I didn't need it!. Make sure you take someone with you because you will be incapable of driving. I recommend it as the way to go for us "dental phobics" it really works. I've also found that a sedation dentist really cares, they understand that you have fears, no criticism from them, they're just glad to be able to help you, mine even apologized to me for my previous unpleasant experiences with other dentists and told me I wasn't alone in my fears. They understand that it's a HUGE deal for us cowards just to get in the door. I say go for it, you'll be glad you did. By the way, one nice side effect of the sedation was that I had next to no pain afterwards, the pills relax you so much that the dentist doesn't have to fight your natural tension to pull teeth or to keep your mouth open while doing a filling, if you're not tense then the treatment goes faster and easier. If you have any other questions just e-mail me.
In answer to another posters question, the way to find a sedation dentist is go online and type in "sedation dentist" and your city and state. That's how my daughter in law found mine.

I am a fearful patient also
DONOT dose yourself on valium and then take what they will give you, it is easy to get an overdose if you play with the amounts. After you relax on the pills they will use either gas or shots to fully deaden the pain.
