Personally I would stain them, and not paint. But if you were to paint them, I would paint them a nice complimentary color to what your floor is.

If they are not already painted you can buy colored stains that don't hide the wood grain. You could also use a wash of 60% paint and 40% water to still see some wood.
As far as a color I would go with a brown that matches your floors and counters. White or creme is good depending on your molding color....Good Luck!

I think it depends on the style of cabinets. If they're ornate you might go with a white or eggshell color for a french look, black is good for a modern kitchen. Personally, I like stained wood grain.

paint the cabinets a light color, so the main focus won't be on the cabinets when you walk into the kitchen.

I am assuming that, when you say "you," you don't mean me, but you mean yourself. It is impossible to advise you on cabinet colors when we don't know what your flooring, wall treatment or window treatment is and whether you intend on changing those too.

mine were wood; they were very outdated from the 70's...we sanded them. Painted a nice white; not bright white. Then we distressed them...sanded the corners, etc. Got new knobs off of ebay.
they look fantastic. if you have any more questions let me know.

Why not strip them down and revarnish them? You could even add that beat up look by hitting the wood and making it look rustic?
