1. Eat a healthy diet (notice I didn't say "Go on a diet", they are quite different). Eat several small meals during the day instead of just 3 large meals. Don't skip breakfast, this is the most important meal of the day. Don't eat or drink anything with high fructose corn syrup, especially non-diet sodas (trust me on this one).
2. Start a resistance exercise routine to maintain muscle mass (muscle is what burns calories in your body and the more muscle the higher your metabolism). Muscle mass burns calories 24hours a day, 365days a year.
3. Supplement the resistance exercises with aerobic activities (cycling, jump rope, jogging, swimming, stair stepper, etc). This will help burn fat. It's better to do these activities AFTER you do your resistance exercise routine (lift free weights or use weight machines). This is because you burn off glycogen (energy stores in your muscles) during the resistance exercises and your body will then want to start using fat when you are doing your aerobics.
4. Make sure to eat a good meal after your workouts.
5. Be consistent and patient. You didn't gain all that weight in a couple of weeks, so you are not going to lose it in just a couple of weeks. If you can lose a pound of fat a week for an entire year you will have lost 52lbs of fat. And remember, just because the scale doesn't change it doesn't mean you didn't lose fat. You may have gained muscle and lost an equal amount of fat. Weight loss and fat loss are not the same thing. Learn to understand the difference.
6. Be consistent and patient (I repeated on purpose). If you put in the work you will reap the rewards. Follow the above steps and you will lose weight and look and feel much better.
I recommend finding a good fitness magazine and read it and learn. If you keep these things in your mind you will eventually change your mindset and start thinking about how to live a healthier lifestyle. Muscle and Fitness is a good start. You don't have to look like the people in that magazine (takes a lot of hard work over a very long time anyway), but you should follow the same type of disciplined routine as they do.
Good luck.

You need to begin to start with better, healthier eating habits.
Cut out most if not all junkfood(pop, candy, cake, icecream),food high in refined sugars, food that is processed, wheat products that are not 100% whole wheat( wheats that are not are no different than eating a bowl of sugar as far as your body is concerned)It should say 100% wheat flour on the ingredients. If you read the ingredients on a loaf of bread that claims to be whole wheat most likely will say "enriched" wheat flour. It's a deceiving word making it sound like you're getting something more. But its no differnet than sugar like I mentioned early.
Never, never skip breakfast. Starting from breakfast you should eat every 2 and a half to 3 hours. Keep your meals small. Depending on your activity level you should eat 4 to 6 small meals a day with breakfast being the biggest.
A good rule of thumb when it comes to your diet.If man made it don't eat it!( Fast food, frozen.dinners, sweets etc)
Here's my typical diet:
Breakfast: Scrambled egg whites, hash browns, One 100% whole wheat bagel
Next three meals are usually a can of tuna or cottage cheese and a peice of fruit or vegetable
Dinner: Chicken breaast and veggies or Chicken Salad.
My last snack is usually a fifth of Jack Daniels and bag of Doritos.
just kidding on the last.
Sometimes I slip away from this routine especially on the weekend but I know when I eat like this my metabolism is sky high and I lose weight fairly quickly and stay pretty slim. If you stick to a diet like this you will lose weight and then obviously if you add cardio aerobic excercise that will increase your results.Don't ever get in the rut that some people do by going to the gym alot but are eating like S***.It's a wash. Oh and lots of water also good luck.

The best way is the oldest advice in the book. Eat right and exercise. I have a friend who was 300lbs. She made a conscious decision to eat healthier and committed to a work-out routine. Over the course of a year, she lost over 150lbs.
Start out by committing to get into the gym 3-5 days a week and just focus on cardio. Cardio is great for weight loss because it burns calories, increases your heart rate, creates sweat which releases toxins from your body and increases your metabolism. Your body will release endorphins which will boost your moods. After you get into the habit of going to the gym, then make the effort to adjust your eating habits. The word "diet" is a temporary fix to a permanent problem. If you want to eat healthier, you must change your eating habits forever.

seek a professional like i did, it has paid off beyond belief and saved me money! if losing some pounds of any description is what you want then I used a great website and coach who helped me. They were very friendly and gave me lots of great advice. I needed to lose 40 pounds and I did so fairly easily. The website is www.myhealthabcmall.com once you fill in your details then you can see the full range of products they have. The products really work and you feel great whilst losing weight, its all nutrition based.
I lost all my weight in less than three months and they have helped me to keep it off. I would definitely recommend using them, the tips you get and encouragement are excellent (their advice and time is FREE). I am still with them so I stay healthy. If you just want to buy the products and not use the coaching then you can do that aswell, there is a link in there to email them so you can tell them you just want to buy and not speak to anyone. The owners will even advise you via email on what to purchase depending on what you want to lose, my sister did it this way (she was more self conscious than me) and lost 76 pounds in less than five months. These guys are just great, try them.

Well my boyfriend has lost 80lbs. in the past 9 months.
I cut out all "whites" from his diet. Such as flour, rice, pasta, bread, and sugar. Most of which can be substituted with wheat products. He just simply had well balanced meals and his exercise was simply walking. He would walk twice a day for 30 min.
He says that the reason he feels that this has worked for him is because he never was left to feel hungry. And that he could eat meat and cheese. (in moderation of course)
I also kept cereals and plenty of fruits around for him to munch on.
Good Luck, it's hard getting started, but I promise it does get easier. If he can do it anyone can!!
