I have an older dog who has known health problems. He is on medication for coughing and another to help coat his stomach. I know the pills should be helping, and he is scheduled for another vet appointment soon, but right now he is coughing a lot. He hasn't eaten much because he's coughing too much to be able to swallow, I'm guessing. Any suggestions as to what I can do in the meantime to help calm his cough so maybe he can eat something?

I would pick up the phone and call my vet to ask that question. They are the ones I trust with my dogs health care,

It depends on why the dog is coughing. My dog had irritation of the trachea, so my vet had me give him benadryl until I was able to come in. It helped a little, but not much. He ended up on a cough suppressant (from the vet) and some antibiotics. I'd say to call your vet and ask him. He should be more than happy to offer advise, or even to fit you in sooner if the dog isn't improving.

It sounds like you need to go to the vet and not wait until your scheduled appointment, especially if the cough is so severe the dog can't eat.

Robitussin is what my vet recommended in addition to the medications my dog was on for kennel cough.
