The Airborne or as you refer to them para's is roughly the equivalent of the marines both groups have support staff and both groups have levels above them for eliteness. Not everyone goes through Jump School. It is very tough school to get through.
Marines have their force recon and the army has special ops and rangers. All of the different groups have their own fields of expertize. Since you can't always rely on a beach to land forces on. So IMO they are equivalent forces. Also if you check there are very few units which are jump capable making it a smaller force than the marines.

You need to reword your question or do some more research on the differences in "elite" forces. A trumpet player for the Army band can get para training, so your question doesn't really apply to reality.
Try asking which is more elite, Army Special forces, Army Delta Force, Navy Seals, Marine recon or Airforce PJ's, they all do a different job for the good of the same mission, so my answer is they all rock!

My opinion is bias. So, let's just stick with the facts. The Marine Corps is a much smaller force than is the Army. They are so small infact, that they don't even have their own medical support or religious personnel. They get both of these from the Navy, who must be specially trained just to keep up -- in essence, they are put through a secondary boot camp.
Army spec. ops is so incredibly large, they number in the thousands. And, they have divided into separate groups, the Green Berets, Delta Force and PJs., etc., etc., etc.. The Marine Corps only has one, Force Recon.. and they are truly elite in ever sense of the word. Their numbers are less than 1000.
My opinion? My observation during Desert Storm was made during my one trip to a rear area. We passed hundreds of Army vehicles moving into positions we'd abdandoned so that we could move farther north. The Navy Times (news magazine) reported that the Army was the furthest north, but from my vantage point, they were all behind my Marine Corps unit. Add to that bias, on the night that my unit was over run and completely surrounded, our Army back ups, heard the call for support and dumped their trash and headed south -- way to go 4th Armor Division, great support! I lost 11 men that night. Patton would have rolled over in his grave. And Chesty Puller just smiled.

U.S. Marines, Remember how the saying goes, "First to Fight". Marines are the first ones in. The training and tactics used are on a Higher level than special forces. Marines are trained to fight like the hounds of hell and utilize different tactics than the PJ's use. Overall, PJ's vs Marines. Paras lose.

Paras, marine recon,,,, pretty much the same thing. In reality every service branch has the equivalent and their training will differ only as it relates to their particular mission. In most situations 2 or more of the units will be involved in a mission.
But you can't forget about E-Tac, of course we are the best
