The olfactory bulb(s) are the part of the nervous system that detects smells. It is a very old part of the brain and is very closely related to the part of the brain that is involved in emotions. Part of the brain involved in emotion the "entorhinal cortex" translates to "smell brain." It is believed that because the two functions are so interconnected physically in the brain, that is why we respond to smells with such strong emotions sometimes.
