I got a kitten for my nieces & nephew. I kept her 2 weeks before Xmas. I found out quickly that she was sick. She was congested, sneezing, and having a hard time breathing. Took her to the vet, and he said she had upper respiratory infection. She went home with my sister and kids....and has taken all of the antibiotics. She seems to have gotten a little better. But when she sneezes.......bloody snots come out. Why does she do this?? Any ideas on what can be wrong??

her mucous membranes are irrated from all the sneezing. Most likely that the force of the sneezing is causing some capilaries in the nostrils to break. Same reason why we get bloody boogers when we pick our nose too much or its dry outside. Its a common thing for a very sick and snotty kitty to get. Colds only get worse before they get better. Watch her, be very dillegent on her medications. Wipe her nose and eyes alot for her so she is not re-ingesting all that snot when she cleans herself. The snot and blood will decrease once the medication takes effect. If shes had the cold for a long period of time it may be a week or two before the snot and blood goes away.
She also will need more medication if she finished it already. Or something stronger. She could have been exposed to distemper as a young kitten and made it through, but when a cat has that happen they are always more likely to get sick often and severely, often times being cronically sick, because the distemper virus has partially destroyed there immune system. Take her back to the vet right away any dissruption in the medicine will delay her recovery and cause more discomfort and distress.

Happened to my Lilah when I first brought her home - tell the VET...she's broken some capilliaries in her nose, which causes the blood, they should give her some Drops for the nose to heal & calm them...but be very diligent on giving the meds - as Upper Respiratory Infections are very dangerious for the little ones.

Also you might bring her into the bathroom with the door closed when you take a hot shower - Just to have her near the steam (not in the shower) just the steam. Or run a humidifier..it will help.

Best of luck...my Lilah got all better and now she's an adorable 2 yrs old.

Since you called the vet that originally looked at the cat and prescribed medication, I would just make sure to keep a close one on the cat for a day. Try to find out if he/she is eating normal, going to the litter normal, overall acting normal and especially if if looks like the sneezing is getting worse or better. If you see the cat is sneezing more blood, then I would definitely take him/her in to the vet, which you may want to do anyway, but just watch for a day or so. It could be that it's just irritated and all the infection is trying to come out. Not real sure. Hope the kitty gets better.

Your kitten will probably need another course of antibiotics. I was given a stray after my cat went misssing (cayotees we think) it was a bad time for me my fiance had just passed away and my son and his girlfriends mother thought another cat would help. Well he did but he was in a shelter for three years and had a bad repiratory infection it took a month of medication before he stopped sneezing and there was blood in it) He is a healthy happy cat now but it took a month so go back to the vet and insist on more meds for the kitten. Good luck

I would take the Kitten back to the Vet. There may be a more serious problem other than Upper Resp. Infection. My Kitten did the same thing one night. Come to find out, it was just really dry in my house. It didn't help that he hit his nose on the carpet.
