they bought what they truly needed, not what would be nice to have. Today, we are too generous with the 'needed' label just for pure convience.

These people were raised through a depression. They learned that even food was a blessing. They learned to get by with what they had ......survival. Those lesson die hard. Most carried those lessons with them their entire lives. One winter coat would last for 20 years. Now that was a good coat!

They all pulled together and non of the children were selfish and respected the fact that what Poppa and Grandma were doing was their best for the whole family. The importance of family was obviously number 1 in this loving family. Be grateful that you were born into this family and try and follow in your grandparents footsteps. Also back then people didn't spend money they didn't have, ie: credit cards maxed out all over the place, and would save for purchases. Although you cannot speak with either of your grandparents, you can hear about how they were so successful by speaking with either your mom or dad to learn more of their lifestyle.

Ha! No 3-5 TVs in each home, no cellphone (1 phone in the home with a possible extension), made a lot of the food home made instead of store bought, own veggie garden, maybe a few apple trees, 1 car and maybe a truck for work, hand me down clothes instead of "new" (the youngest probably got the last of the "goods"), making clothes!, no computers, no credit cards, and everyone worked and helped around the house! Eating together and bonding were important "constants"...ah, the good old days...

Times were much different then. The cost of living was much lower and people didn't NEED things the way they do now. Kids didn't need the newest coolest sneakers and clothes. People didn't go out like they do now (movies, restaurants). They probably had a 3 or 4 bedroom home, never went out to eat, the kids all wore homemade hand me downs, grew their own vegetables, had no t.v., no stereo, no car, no computers, etc., etc. People waste so much money on nothing these days, myself included.

I am one of 10!! Its a lot of hand me downs. We raised our food, and did without what was not needed. I hated Green beans and stawberries for years. I always got to pick them, since I was the youngest. I don't remember having a lot of Junk Food in the house. When we got it, wow it was a treat.
Mom used to make our clothes when we were little. I cant remember seeing things others had, and wanting them. I never knew I went without. We had each other to play with and torture.
I consider those great days. I would not want to go back however. I love Junk Food to much Now. LOL

They didn't waste money on the luxuries that we have today add it up its amazing Cost of cell phone, cable TV, Internet service, cost of a computer, convenient stores etc............ Oh and going out to eat back then meant having a picnic NOT 100$ AT OUT BACK. They knew how to stretch a buck

it was a different time. Your expenses then were your home, food, clothing, a car, and gasoline. No internet, cell phone (or even telephone in most cases), or any of the hundreds of other expenses and 'necessities' we have today. Add to that that most families grew their own food and possibly even made their own clothes, and you have a much lower cost of living than you have today.

Things were simpler then, and they probably made sacrifices on extravagant things and went with the basics. They probably made some of their clothing, and canned home grown food and scrimped everywhere they could to make ends meet.

Because the cost of living has gone up while the wages haven't. A dollar went a lot further then.

Back then people were not as obsessed with acquiring "things" as we are now. They probably only had one car, no family vacations, stuff like that, but they were also probably very happy.
