I go to one of two major gyms in a small to average sized college town. I love the group fitness at this gym, it's probably the reason I keep my membership. The equipment is good and there is a women's only work out area and a nice pool. My gripe, and I might be being picky, is the bathrooms/locker rooms are pretty gross. I feel like the showers are never clean and they are just drab. I really wish they would improve on this area. I would like to be able to shower after a workout but it is disgusting. Also, do most gyms provide towels. I feel like they should. I would like it to be more spa-like. What are other gyms like? Am I too picky? My husband and I pay $78 a month for membership.

Oh...and is the steam room safe to sit in?

Some gyms provide towels, but I recently read an article where there is no guarantee those towels are washed in hot water and/or bleached to kill germs, so you're better off bringing your own towel. Wear flip-flops in the shower and never sit on a bench without your towel underneath you.

By all means, address your complaints to the management or owner and encourage other women to do the same. If enough people complain, maybe they will clean it up. The owner may be male and thoroughly clueless about the state of the women's bathroom. He may assume the people he are paying to clean it are doing their jobs but never checks.

Well my gym has a large reception with lounge bar, kids creche, spinning rooms, workout room, beauty spa - which does everything from body wraps to nails to st tropez tans, a large gym where the machines all have touch screen tv's in them, 2 nice changing rooms with showers, a large pool and steam room. It costs £27 a month but i dont know what that is in dollars, much less than what your paying though! There is a towel hire service which doesnt cost much.

I guess only you know what the quality and the rest of your gym is like, if this is the only thing your gym is failing in maybe other people are thinking the same thing and you could suggest it being improved to the recpetionist/management? Maybe they're not aware its bothering people?

Personally for that amount of money i would want something pretty special to be honest! Maybe try looking around, at the the end of the day it's your money and if your not happy i'd think about going elsewhere.

i work in fitness center, and i can tell you the bathrooms are always drab, and the cost of providing towel service in our gym ran us over 300,000 a year. so a lot of places have stopped providing towels. and if you belive the locker rooms are unclean ask to speck to a manager or write a comment card. and the way you describe your gym is a hell of alot nicer then some i have been too.

If cleanliness in the locker room is an issue, you need to say something to the staff (I know, I know they should be on top of it...but they get sidetracked). In the gym I go to, they have signs posted in the locker room that if it's not clean, say something and it will be cleaned immediately.

And no, the gym I belong to does not offer towels. The one I went to years ago did, but they were pathetic and I brought my own anyway.

they should be providing towels and a better locker room service
78 dollars is an average amount to pay
but still the locker rooms should at least be decent

You usually have to supply your own towels and if its drab, complain to the management!;
