"Anaesthesia alone in healthy well patients has a mortality (due to unexpected drug reactions, haste, device malfunction, etc) of 1:500,000. This contrasts with the 1:30 chance of being killed or maimed if you are a driver from the age of 17 to 25, and is far less than the risk of surgery. Overall the risk of death due to anaesthesia in all patients undergoing surgery is about 1:30,000. This is about the same risk of death and/or disablility as driving 10km to and from work in Sydney traffic for a few months."

You should definitely discuss your concerns and your sensitivity to drugs with your doctor.

I would tell your doctor about your sensitivity. I have been under anesthesia about 6 times in my life and I also am very sensitive to certain medications that most people have no problem with. The last time I was in the hospital I did have an adverse reaction to the anesthesia, but they quickly administered another type of drug that fixed the problem. I wouldn't be too concerned, because the chance of something happening is extremely rare. An experienced anesthesiologist will be there the entire time and is trained to respond if something should go wrong. Even after my experience, I would still do it again. You have a greater risk of dying every day when you get in your car. Good luck and tell your doctor. You'll feel better.

Not Waking Up From Anesthesia

Don't worry. Make the doctor aware of you being sensitive to anesthesia prior to being put under, and he could use less. And i'm not sure of the odds of dying under anesthesia, but I work for an outpatient surgery center, and it has been open for 2 years, and no one has died yet because of thier procedure or anesthesia, so I think the odds of 50/50 don't work out, because that means half of our pt's would be dead. Talk to your doctor about any concerns that you have prior. Safe guards can be but into place. And try to believe as I will for you, you will be fine.

Modern anesthesia is extremely safe, particularly if you are otherwise healthy. Your heart, oxygen level, blood pressure will all be carefully and continuously monitored during your operation. Serious problems with anesthesia are extremely rare, even side-effects such as prolonged confusion and nausea are very uncommon this day and age. Most of your risk come from the operation itself, which you should discuss with your surgeon.

In terms of anesthesia risk, you risk of getting in a serious car wreck to and from the hospital is probably considerably higher.

The odds are extremely small. There is always a chance, but it is very unlickely that it happens.
