He knows how to use his pee pad, and goes there often. Also, I can never seem to catch him in the act. How do I break him of this?

because he can smell it there, so he keeps going there. you need to use a specific cleaner to get the smell out of the carpet.

hes doing it cause he can still smell it. You first have to clean that spot with something to take out the smell. Dont use store cleaners or ANY cleaner with Ammonia or Alchol in the ingredients. Pee is Ammonia and if you use that kind of cleaner it will only enforce the area with that smell. You need a vinegar based cleaner. I Have always used Vinegar, Lemon Juice, Dish detergent, and poppuri oil mixed with water. I let it soak into the carpet and padding then I dry with with towels and a hair dryer. Then to be double sure put a pee pad over the top of the spot or near it. So he has that to go to and not the spot. Fill a can or bottle with some nails and screws. If you see him get near the spot shake the can at him and say NO really loud and bossy.
ATTENTION: Be sure a cleaner doesnt fade, dye, or bleach your carpets. Always test a cleaner first on a corner on a little bit of carpeting. If its tile or hard flooring, Dont use bleach on the spot cause Ammonia and Bleach can react causeing very toxic gasses.

Because he can smell it ! There is a product called Nature's Miracle....its fairly expensive ( 30$ a gallon at our local pet shop ) but it has enzymes in it to break down the oder causing bacteria. You pour it ( not spray it ) on the area....it has to soak into the padding as well and let it air dry. Sniff the area after its dry....if you can still smell pee treat again the same way. After you are sure the smell is gone....then spray the area with a pet repelant. Repelants usually have a smell animals find unpleasant. You could also try feeding the dog in that corner. I know it sounds strange...but animals dont like to pee/poo near their food...just start putting his food bowl on the spot that he pees....that might stop him.

Dogs are territorial. They 'mark' their territory with urine and anal sac secretions. The way to neutralize the corner...is to use baking soda and water paste to spread on the area affected. Baking soda neutralizes the odor that triggers his 'pee' reflex. If a dog smells urine, it triggers a urinary reflex. I read in a book regarding the habits of canines that their 'pee' is a sort of newspaper. If while outside, you see your pet smelling the ground or trees...they are detecting another dog's scented 'newspaper' and will often leave their own 'article' on top of it. Evidently, they get much more out of it than we do.

Mix a paste of baking soda and water and work well into the corner...include the baseboards, too. Allow it to stand overnight and vacuum or rinse the next morning. There are also some commercial sprays that will help to remove odor and discoloration caused by the urine. Using a black light in a dark room will help one to 'see' specifically where the urine is so that you do not treat too much area.

Taking your pet for a walk or allowing them outside within 20 minutes after meals may help to prevent this problem from becoming a bad habit.

You need to clean the area he's already soiled previously with a cleaned specifically designed to break down biological stains that includes an enzyme cleaner such as Orange TKO (I buy online) or Nature's Miracle for dogs. Secondly restart his potty training...

Get him a body harness and 5-6 foot leash. Whenever he is indoors and not crated tie the leash to your belt, so the dog goes wherever you go...this way you'll always be seeing him and can watch for his signals/circling/scratching that he does to tell he is about to go...when you see the signals immediately take him to designated potty area, use command word, give lots of praise, and treat upon completion.

You should also consider if it's not already been done, but euter your dog, it'll reduce aggression and marking.

Instead of using an ammonia based cleaner which is the base of urine, try using bleach. There is also a spray called "No Go" for canines. If this does not work try placing the pad in the same corner.

Take the pee pad where he is peeing. and place the pad exactly where he is peeing. and if he is hiking his leg my advice is to place the pad up against the wall and the floor. I have a Chi and i have to do that my self. Because he obviously wants to pee where he wants to pee. Doesn't matter where I want him to pee.So I give in and no more messes on anything but the pad.
