my son left for school this morning and the school called to inform me that he wasn't in school nor has he been in school for the past 6-7 days. Should I report him missing?

It really depends upon where you live. If he has been home in the last week, he is "truant" and not missing. If that is the case, you can decide if you want to confront, or report your son to a truancy officer. Local laws govern how you report a missing person, but here are some "rules of thumb." If a person is an immediate danger to themselves or others you must report them missing immediately. For children who are AWOL there is a waiting period that is usually much less than 12hrs. (For full details contact your local PD on a nonemergancy line) Adults who are missing are reported after 24hrs.

It depends on the age of the person/ child, as well as the laws in your area. For most PD's, or cities, an adult missing person's report isn't taken for 48 hours. It is less for children.

I don't think he is really missing, as you say he hasn't been in 6-7 days. I assume he has come home each day in those 6-7 days? If that is the case, he is truant, not missing. Just so you know, you can, and likely will be, held just as accountable for him being truant from school, if not more.

This kid needs a wake up call! He is not missing, he is truant...which is still against the law unless he is 16, and then, there isn't much you can do...he can legally quit school at that age. If he is under 16...then the truancy thing can definitely be a reason for the police to get involved.

Why did the school wait 7 days to call you? I'd have to say they have been a little lax in their duties.

I wish you luck and guidance with this...it's a tough one.

If he is coming home every night, then he's not missing! Telling the police that he is missing even when he comes every night would be an abuse of police department's resources. If he never goes to school, then you need to get help, possibly from a alternative school or juvenile detention center.

You should have reported him missing after you talked to the school. I hope by now you have reported him missing. Good luck.

If he left this morning, but hasn't been there, its simple...he's skipping school. But if he's not coming home and you haven't called and you haven't seen him in a week, You should have called a long *** time ago!!

You saw him this morning... he isn't missing. Spank him hard when he gets back this evening and talk about going to school.

Only if he doesn't come home when he should. Otherwise, you're dealing with a typical case of a kid ditching school.
