Many Christians believe that we are in the "last days" or that there are many signs that Jesus will return soon. Many Muslims also believe the same thing.

However, what if Jesus NEVER returns in the way Christians or Muslims expect Him to? What if it's the 24th century and He still hasn't come down from literal clouds and there is no literal resurrection, rapture or Judgment Day? Will 24th century Christians join another religion or give up on religion?

This is a purely hypothetical question, and not an attack on any religion.

revdauphinee, yes both Christians AND Muslims believe that Jesus will return. It's mentioned in the Bible AND Qur'an. Muslims expect both the Mahdi and the Return of Christ.

End of the world talk by Christians is not new, it's been going on for thousands of years. I'm thinking by 2400 many will give it up

No for we have been told
matthew 24:36. "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
37. As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.
38. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark;

muslims by the way are not waiting for jesus return they await the mahdi!
39. and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.
40. Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left.
41. Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.
42. "Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.

Gospel According to Saint Matthew
Chapter 6

33 Seek ye therefore first the kingdom of God, and his justice, and all these things shall be added unto you.

34 Be not therefore solicitous for tomorrow; for the morrow will be solicitous for itself. Sufficient for the day is the evil thereof.

The origins of the doctrine of the rapture are hotly debated. The Orthodox, mainline Protestant, and Roman Catholic churches (which represent the majority of Christians worldwide) have no tradition of such a teaching and reject the doctrine, in part because they cannot find any reference to it among any of the early Church fathers and in part because they do not interpret the scriptures the way that Rapture-believers do.

People have been believing it is the end times since the start of Christianity. If they have waited this long, another 3 centuries aren't going to bother them.

No, because Christianity is ALL about Christ. We patiently await his return, and will continue to do so until he does. if he hasn't returned by the 24th century, that still doesn't mean that he won't. Patience is a virtue.

Some are trying to convince us that we already missed him, I don't know if that's what you're aiming at? No, he hasn't been there yet, he'll return the way you describe it above. We don't know when. We Christians have been patiently waiting for 2000 years and will, if nesscary wait another 400 years or longer.

Nope, now have this picture in my head of "Jesus of Borg"...Christians set out in their spaceships off into the galaxy to preach "the good news" to alien races and assimilate them for the glory of God.

Nope, they'll just change the bible (again) to fit their needs. Its easy to be religious when you can change, at will, the book that is supposed to be your faith.
