Actually would be best if the cat could stay at her place and you go there to feed and water it. If not, don't let it outside at your place unless you have a cat "pen" that is screen on all sides - or the cat likes to be leashed - you don't want to risk him getting away...

It is relatively simple thing to care for a cat or "kitty-sit." The ONE thing you have to remember is to NEVER let the cat outside because you may have a lot of trouble getting the cat to come back in. Besides, the cat could get into serious trouble outdoors. So keep the cat indoors at all times. other than that, here are pointers:

1. Find out from your freind how the cat is fed: feeding times, what to feed and how much. Feed cat in clean bowl always and discard uneaten food.

2. Provide fresh water in water bowl everyday. Do not allow water bowl to go empty - whther or not you notice if the cat is drinking.

3. Provide clean litter box. Cats will not use a dirty soiled litter box. Ask your freind how she cleans the litter box because this will depend on the type of litter used.

4. Cats will want to sleep or nap during the day. Allow the cat to choose his own sleeping spot and see that he is undisturbed by loud noises.

5. Cats get spooked and stressed when there are too many new goings on in his environment which can result in problematic behaviors. To prevent this, keep the cat's environemtn serene and calm and quiet. If you are expecting visitors, confine the cat in one bedroom and close the door.

The best would be if you could go round to the cat's house and feed it there. Keep its usual routines as far as you can - if it's out in the daytime and in at night, for example, stick with that.

If you need to have the cat at yours, don't let it outside, it won't be there long enough to get used to the place. You'll need a litter tray and bowls for food and water, which I'm sure your friend can provide. It's a nice gesture to have a special blanket or box for the cat, but chances are it wouldn't sleep in it if you provided one, so don't worry if it doesn't arrive with a bed.

Check with your friend how much food to give the cat and how often. Make sure it's always got clean water, but don't worry if it tries to drink from the tap or the toilet, just move the cat back to its water bowl. Get your friend to leave the carrying box and the vet's number just in case.

If the cat doesn't know you well it'll be shy, so don't worry about this. Be quiet and gentle. If you bring it to your house have cat, cat food, water and litter all in one room to start with so it doesn't have to go too far into unknown territory.

If it's naughty (eg scratching furniture) clap your hands to startle it or spray it with clean water.

It's only a week, and cats are fairly resilient, so don't worry about it, and enjoy the cat's company! You never know, you might like it so much you want one of your own!

Ask your friend how she would like you to care for it. Don't let it go outside if it's not an outside cat. Are you going over to the friends house to care for it? If so, the cat should be fine if you make sure it has food and water. Maybe play with it too. If the cat is brought over to your house it will most likely be scared of the new place and spend it's time hiding. Just make sure it has food and water.

...and clean it's litter box at least once a day. (by scooping out the poo and pee spots)

Is it coming to stay at your house? If so don't let it out as it will try to make it's way home and will get lost.

If at her house, is there a cat flap? Does the cat normally go out? If yes then the cat can go out if no then don't let it out.

Beware that if you let it out you will have to wait for it to come back and you could be waiting for ages.

In terms of looking after the cat. Depends on age but usually they will need to be fed twice a day and have their litter tray changed daily. If the cat has long hair then you will need to brush it as well.

Ask the lady in question for some advise and what she is expecting from you

it would be best if you could go to the cats home to care for it as cats are territorial and it is bad enough a stranger feeding it without the added problem of a strange environment.Try to get to know the cat before the owner goes away, make a list of likes and dislikes ,try to follow closely the cats routine and you should be fine - you may even enjoy it and consider rehoming a rescue cat when the week is over

Cats are not like dogs, they don't need to be let outside, a warm place for it to sleep and a cat litter box is all you need. Food and water of course. It will definitely escape if you let it outside the garden, they are good climbers and can jump out of a fenced area easily.

Taking care of a ladies puzzy is always a delicate business. They need just the right amount of attention, too much and they feel taken for granted and sometimes get quite sore about it, too litle and they may stray.

Feed her well, be gentle but firm and make sure to give her enough milk. They are unpredictable though so good luck.

Couldn't you say C-A-T? LOL! None of my cats go outside. I would check with her as to if hers does. More than likely, she will bring a litter pan.
