Somebody told me that it costs about $3/mile. I am skeptical about this info. I intend to take a 90 mile cab ride from Las Vegas. I am not sure if I can afford it.

It varies from one location to the next. $2.00 - $3.00 a mile would not be out of line for local fares. A long distance flat-rate fare is based on the round trip mileage since the driver is not allowed to pick up fares outside their licensed area, so the one-way cost per mile is typically about 50% higher. A 90 mile cab ride would typically be between $180 & $300 in most major cities.

Most major airports have various shuttle services that run to outlying areas at a much lower cost per mile.

FYI I am discussing prices in Sacramento, CA.

I saw a local cab just a couple of days ago. It was leased to the driver and was plainly marked with a $2.50 meter drop and $2.00 a mile thereafter. I have seen others higher as well. Call the cab company you want to use and ask. A trip of that length would also warrant a healthy tip, and you could incur costs for the cab to return to Las Vegas, especially since getting a return fare is unlikely.

It would probably be cheaper to rent a car one way from a major company like Hertz.

It can vary a lot city to city. In New York City, the fare is $2.50 + $0.40 per 1/5 mile traveled or every minute not traveling/moving slowly, plus additional surcharges for nighttime ($0.50) or rush hour ($1.00).
In Philadelphia, I think the rates start at $2.70, with an additional $0.30 per 1/7 mile or per minute stopped, with other surcharges possible.

First of all, meter fares are typically doubled on very long trips, so it will be quite expensive. Your best bet would be to take a bus, train, or plane if you can. Otherwise, call local cab companies and negotiate a rate. They will do this for a long trip.

Wait, cab fare in the U.S. is paid with money? Oh wow, that cabbie back in West Virginia really pulled a fast one on me.

Different places have different prices but $3.00 a mile seems about right. I would look into taking a bus would be much cheaper.
