It's a shame her father isn't around but what a lucky little lady she is to have a thoughtful Mum like you!

If you'd like to teach her two languages, research shows that you should teach both at the same time as she is growing. Language asquisition is always more effective before the age of five. If you think about it - it's quite a challenge to learn a new language as an adult but babies minds are like sponges picking up new words all the time.

Being that the language a little person needs isn't too diverse, you could probably learn as you go along teaching her new words for things.

If you have time and I think you can manage it then it would be great to teach her and hopefully fun for you too. Even if she doesn't use it with her other relatives it'll be a useful skill later in life.

Since she'll still have contact with that side of the family, that would be nice. You should learn it to reinforce it. This will be a big challenge for you!!

Start it now. By the time she's old enough, it will be too difficult and she'll give up (having no one around to support/speak with her).

Get some video tapes, learn some vocab, and speak both languages to your daughter.

OR, hire a Portugese nanny/babysitter and make sure she only speaks her language to her.

If you learn Portuguese, do it for yourself, i e , if you want to keep in touch with her father's family. I do not think it is wise to learn Portuguese to teach her as you will be teaching her Portuguese with an accent and probably faulty. What you can do is perhaps get her a Potuguese teacher later on when she is older.

I think you should yes, and I think you're an absolutely wonderful Mum for even considering it after what you have been through with her father! I think it's really important that she keeps to her roots, and I think you're a star!
I would probably start when she is about 3 but it might be an idea if you get a head start... My son started to learn French at school when he was 4yrs and he got a good grasp of it!

Good Luck! xx

I would say if your going to learn a language the learn one that is used more like French, German or Spanish.... Dont learn just because her dad is from there as you might not even see him much.... If you do she will pick it up anyway.

yeah the more languages taught the earlier the better.

Dont wait... kids learn lauguages easiest and most fluent from as young an age as possible... Its much harder when older.

And then they want chat up, swaer words, insutls and slang... Not baby talk.
