If not, site some examples. You don't have to tell me exactly where they are in the bible. Just what you remember of the scripture or story. I'll know where it is.

There is much symbolism in prophecy. Daniel's and John's vision's of the beasts from the sea for example.
Peter's vision of the sheet lowered from Heaven would be another example.
Jesus' parables (ten virgins, rich man built a vineyard, etc...)

The Bible was not meant to be understood AT ALL.

Most christians do take it literally - and then have trouble with all the literal contradictions that get pointed out to them.

So they change it to allegorically and then wonder why we say the bible is just a fairy story.

Anyway do you honestly beleive that human beings can walk on water? Except where there are rocks just under the surface, it cannot be done. So either Jesus stepped on rocks just under the surface or he didnt do it.

No other humans have been documented "walking on water" - especially not out in the middle of a large lake in the middle of a storm.

If you want to take the resurecction as literal - is there ANY documentation in all of human history of ANY one rising from the dead - apart from Jesus & Lazarus in the bible. No there is NOT.

Being in a coma and reawakening - sure there are tons of those stories, but they were never dead.

Most of Scripture is to be taken literally. When is talks of beasts, that usually represents nations, so that is not literal. Many passages are clearly picturesque, and to what extent they are literal is open to question. For instance Jonah said he was in the belly of the "whale" forever. Well obviously he was out when he wrote that! You need to make a question more specific... as in this text_____________ is it literal? or how can we understand it to be true without its meaning violating what we know about the Almighty? There are many difficult passages. Some misunderstand Hebrew idiom, and translate IT literally, like in a pickle. Others simply seem to be mistranslations. Like the Savior's name on His thigh (Rev. 19:16) Many think it should be "banner" where a resh was confused with a dagesh.

It depends which way you look at the Bible. The Bible is there for guidance, so if you are stuck in a situation and need some help then yeh take it literally. But the Bible is all Gods words and some say it needs to be modernised for todays word because it goes on about issues in that time. So it depends on your beliefs.

In this Newsweek article about an interview with Billy Graham, called Pilgrim's Progress, he talks about whether the Bible should always be taken literally.
The topic comes up about half-way through.

His views might surprise you.

no.. the bible says that the world was made in 6 days and on the 7th day God rested.. this doesnt have to be interpreted as 6 24hour days.. God created the day! also he didn't make light and dark/ day and night until later (ie/ not the first 'day').. so it could be the case that the time before this had no limit - a day at this point could have been 10 years for all we know! :) hope this helps x

What do you mean by "literal"? Obviously some portions are poetic or allegorical (the book of Revelations, for example, has a verse that expressly tells you that the passage that you just read was allegorical -- in case you couldn't figure that out for yourself).

I believe in the "plain meaning rule". The writer of any given book in the Bible or elsewhere usually says what he means, and means what he says. It is illogical to assume that the writer was deliberately trying to mislead or confuse us as to his true meaning.

It's meant to be taken as what it's given.

For example: David is told about a man who steals a sheep, it's actually a story about himself stealing another man's wife; Samuel tells a story about the trees choosing a king, it's actually a cautionary tale about creating too much politics; Jesus uses hyperbole, such as "pluck your eye out if it causes you to sin," which is meant to be taken as hyperbole.

Well if it was meant to be taken literally why haven't the Christians sold all their possessions, including their computers, iPods, cars, homes, and given all the money to the poor just the way Jesus commanded. Maybe they just take the parts that make them feel good about themselves and ignore the parts that are inconvenient.
