venial is a sin one doesn't know is a sin and keeps doing it when one finds out it might be a sin.

Mortal sin is doing it rebeliously / deliberately when knowing its a sin.

If I am wrong on the deffinitions, please correct me.

A born again Christian does not understand the idea of venial or mortal sin. And they will say that people who know those terms are not "real" Christians. A born again Christian just prays to God and ask for forgiveness. Personally I think that the RC, Orthodox, and Episcopal Churchs have a good idea with the formal confession because it give the sinner someone to get counsel from so they can be strong enough to not commit the sin again.
