The airport is about 10 miles (maybe not that far). Depending on how much you want to spend will depend on how close your room is to the track. Some facilities offer transport to and from the track. Be advised that most places close to the track raise their prices by two or three times their normal rate.
I've listed some links to assist in your search. The first link is for the hotel that is on the grounds of the speedway. The next two have links to visitor info. The last is a travel bureau that is based in Scotland to arrange packages for all the races at the IMS.
You might also contact Robert McTavish at the last link below.

the race track is about 15-20 minutes from the airport, depending on traffic. Best method of transport is to use a cab, and for a hotel well it just depends on how luxury u want to go. For upscale I recommend the Conrad, 14 west (Malibu on Maryland), or the Canterbury. There is also a wide range of other hotels in the downtown area. I highly recommend the hotels downtown. There is much to do and it is nicer downtown. If you get a hotel by the track, well ill put it like this, it won't be a 4 star guranteed and the people will be very blue collar.

from the airport to the track is 6 - 7 miles
best method of transport...depends on where you stay
where to stay...you have 3 choices: airport hotels, hotels downtown, or hotels in Speedway...if you are looking to save money then your best bet would be Speedway...BUT...you need to book a room well in advance.
back to transport...you could either hire a car or take a taxi, but I'd go with the car hire as the hotels do not offer bus transport to the track...BUT...I'm thinking that there are shuttle buses from Marsh grocery store to the track (about 5 minutes drive)
Brickyard Hotel (I think thats what its called) is next to the track/golf course, but its not well kept and I wouldn't stay there. Days Inn, Dollar Inn & the Red Roof Inn are places about 5 minutes (or less) from the track

I would deff. stay at a downtown hotel. Any of them would be fine. Most, if not all of them will offer transport to the track and to and from the airport. The city of Indianapolis usually runs a shuttle to and from the track durring race time as well. By staying downtown, you will be within walking distance to everything you could poss. need while visiting us here in the racing capital of the world!!!!!
The track itself is about 10 miles out of downtown.
Hope this helps you out! Enjoy our town!!

staring at "quantum leaps' in technologies appearing wildly around a racetrack, with a number of the main experienced drivers there are accessible, in some places loaded with genuine motorsport history. What could be greater useful than that? i will assert i'm hooked on F1.

Jessi gave you great answers. The track is not far from the airport at all, the closest places to stay would be in Speedway. Welcome and enjoy!
