No it isn't--if you truly are in love --that means that you have spent plenty of time together--I disagree with the "kick the tires before you buy" thinking--

No! I am a lady, I have been married twice and divorced twice. It seems as though the only thing marriage is good for anymore is to support the government through marriage licenses, taxes, etc. and to support the lawyers and courts through divorces.
If you truely love each other, my suggestion would be to make a commitment, in front of friends and family if you so choose, but without the legalities. If there are children involved, you may have to consult a lawyer on the legalities of non-married parents.
This is what I have done in my LTR with my "husband". If we choose to part, we will split up the material possessions, come to an agreement about everything, and simpley part ways, without the mess of lawyers and court.
There are several states in which common law marriage is now illegal including Wisconsin where we live. It comes in the guise of a law against homosexual marriage, but that's not the whole law. Even though we have been together for 10 years, through thick and thin, if one of us became sick, we couldn't be there for each other legally.
There are many reasons not to get married. Our main one is because his ex-wife has continued to make trouble for us over the years. We don't want her to have control over both of our finances. We have both been married before and see no reason to legalize our relationship. We are now both retired. If we were to be married our income would be cut almost in half because social security only allows the higher rate to be paid to a married couple. We are barely making it as it is.

I was married for ten years. I now live w/ someone and it's not important that we marry. I learned alot the first time around, there is no rush and you end up getting screwed by the IRS until you have kids!

For me, I might care if my family considered it an important matter, but my parents waited 7 years so we've still got one to go. My folks eventually married to make legal matters easier which is (imo) the best reason. Second-best reason is I can't figure out what to call my boyfriend/partner/s.o of six years without confusing people or trivializing our relationship.

No. I live with my bf and i am happy were not married at this point. mind you i moved in with him and his parents which sucks i still want us to have our own place sans the parents. someday i want to be married, just now is not a good time, we need to grow together and live together independently and we are fine under the same roof, marriage may come in time but we agree to just "be" not "be married"

I don't think it's important. I guess it just depends on how long you have lived together.

It's just a piece of paper. To me it wasn't important, but it was to my husband so we did it.
