Because of Christ's infinite and eternal atonement, all are "saved" from death...all can be resurrected. That is all your Baptist minister can or even has authority to promise you.
We as LDS believe in salvation as a future event, most likely not one that can happen in this lifetime - though there are a few who have had their "calling and election made sure"..ask the missionaries about that. Read in Doctrine and Covenants section 132...it is VERY interesting and may answer some of your questions about being "saved"..Chapter heading: Promises of eternal increase and exaltation made to prophets and saints in all ages;
verse 49 For I am the Lord thy God, and will be with thee even unto the end of the world, and through all eternity; for verily I seal upon you your exaltation, and prepare a throne for you in the kingdom of my Father, with Abraham your father.

What they were probably saying is that through the atonement/sacrifice of Jesus Christ all people are saved in the sense all are resurrected and will receive a perfect body. However, this does not mean you will return to God's presence and experience eternal progression (which Mormon's believe is the ultimate goal and is only achieved by entering into certain ordinances of the Priesthood). Simple answer, but straight. If you want to know more I'm glad to add to it.

What the heck... Saved? By being a baptist? You have some confused missionaries... Well, maybe saved in that you will be resurrected, like Pinkadot said... Being saved is when, after doing all you can on earth, and having all your ordinances (either on earth or done by proxy after death), God decides that you are worthy to be saved and exalted to return to live with Him in the Celestial Kingdom. There are varying degrees of this, of course: there are 5 degrees of the Celestial Kingdom, plus the Terrestrial Kingdom and the Telestial Kingdom.

we dont go around talking about being 'saved'
how do you define that? thats a lifetime of faith and hard work.
maybe you want to ask the missionaries exactly what they meant by their comment.
I wish it were as simple to 'accept Christ and be instantly saved' but its not that easy.

I grew up Mormon, and never heard them use the word "saved". And I really doubt that they would tell you that as a Baptist, you are already saved. It's pretty clear on that point.

It meant to be saved out of the harsh cycle of reincarnation probably. To a place where you concentrate to practice purity and attain wisdom until you attain liberation. Until you are liberated, you will still experience sufferings.
If you do not want to practice now, when do you want to start?
