SCORES of religions claim to be Christian. Are they all truly such? How can we tell? One way is in the matter of making disciples.

A Christian is a follower of Jesus Christ. To be his follower means to be not just a believer but an imitator. From the time of his baptism until his death, Jesus spent much of his time in preaching and teaching the good news of God’s kingdom.

IT IS a common thing today to see people who profess to believe the tenets of a religion, but who fail to follow these teachings in their everyday life. Often people consider religion as something to which to “belong,” but not as something to influence their actions in homelife, in business, in dealing with others.

However, true Christianity is not a matter of outward appearance. In fact, in Christianity’s early days it was called “The Way,” because it was more than formal worship. It was a WAY OF LIFE permeated by the worship of God, guided by his spirit. Throughout the Christian Scriptures we find strong expressions that allow for no halfhearted service to God. The person wishing to be a real Christian is told: ‘Make your mind over,’ “be made new in the force actuating your mind” and “put on the new personality.” (Rom. 12:2; Eph. 4:22-24) Along with zealous witnessing, good conduct is continually emphasized.

Accordingly, true Christianity reaches into every aspect of life, of the individual and of the family. The Christian must love and serve God ‘with his whole heart and whole soul and whole mind and whole strength.’ (Mark 12:30) This leaves out no part of his body, his life or his personality.

Unfortunately I think there are a lot of people confused with this, and often add to the definition of Christian the belief in specific teachings which are only true to their particular sect or religion. However, I believe it is simply the belief in Jesus Christ as your Savior and Redeemer, being the only way to overcome our sin and imperfection, and in following His teachings (however you may interpret them).

"Christian" is a bad word. It is based on the Greek "Christos" which means "anointed", but the Greeks did not have an anointing ceremony, so the term is rather meaningless. (At best) { I have been told that it is from "Cretins", but I'm not sure that is the true derivation of the word.} The Messiah was Hebrew, and His name meant the Almighty one (YHVH) is my savior, so His NAME was Yahoshua. His followers called themselves Messianist (in some cases) or Nazarenes. I'm not sure why they used that term, since it means "someone from Nazareth" not "a follower of one from Nazareth", Nonetheless, I am told that is what they called themselves. Many today prefer "believers" (though that is a bit vague also). It avoids being lumped with "churchianity", which generally is teaching mostly errors with very little truth mixed in.

well, scripture defines true religion undefiled as taking care of widows and orphans AND keeping oneself unspotted from the world. James 1:27. I believe this was at the center of Jesus' ministry. Of course, you must accept that Jesus died for your sins and accept Him as your Savior. Unfortunately, most Christians today do not practice these things. I'll admit, I strive to be, but most of the time I miss the mark.

A Christian is someone who believes in Christ, repents of their sins, turns from their sins, and follows Him. This does not mean that Christians are perfect, but that they are trying to make a sincere effort in that direction. We mess up sometimes, but we keep trying to be better than we were before we met Christ.

A Christian is simply a "Christ-follower". Of course, to begin that journey you must be a born again believer in Christ.
