It's one of several strains (actually groups of strains if you want to be picky) of Streptococcus - they're characterized by certain metabolic traits, reference to which I don't have handy. According to Wikipedia (which isn't exactly a medical text) group D Strep are beta-hemolytic (meaning they cause rupture of red blood cells) and usually enteric (meaning they inhabit the GI tract). Sounds like a nasty stomach bug to me; but some former group D Strep have been reclassified because they don't usually cause disease. Your Dr. can give you more complete or up-to-date information if you need it.
