How old is the earth.?
How old is the earth? Rocks on the earth have been dated as old as 4 billion years. Many meteorites have been dated, and we consistently find an age of about 4.5 billion years. Evidence indicates that the meteorites and the earth were formed at about the same time, about 4.5 billion years ago.
I just read an earlier answer that said the earth is 6,000 years old. I swear to God I saw that. Now really people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Last night, light arrived at your house from the distant stars. It must have taken a long time for that light to reach your house, for the stars are very far away, and light travels at only 186,000 miles per second. Scientists tell us it would have taken billions of years for the light to have made that journey from the distant stars. If the light did indeed come from those stars, then the light left those stars billions of years ago. And if the light was traveling for billions of years, than the stars must be very old, and the universe is very old.

The oldest part of the earth, as estimated by most of the earth's scientific community, is approximately 4 billion years old. But that does not neccessarily mean that the earth is that old. It means that the earth is AT LEAST that old. Since the earth's crust (and by extension everything on the earth's crust) is involved in a rock cycle. This cycle involves the crust of the earth to be pushed into the hot core of the earth and be melted into a plastic-like rock material.
To clearly explain this point, I will give an example.
Suppose you have a round ball. If you make a cut down one side and try to open it, what happens? The side opposite the cut becomes deformed. The same happens on the earth's crust. In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, there is something called the Mid Ocean Ridge (MOR). This ridge is the "cut" along the earth. But the earth isn't like the ball. THe earth is filled with a plastic-like rock material that will ooze out of the cut. As this ooze exits the MOR, the rest of the earth's crust is pushed away from the middle of the Atlantic. And where does it go? Both sides collide at the western edge of the Americas. (ie: California down to Chile). It is for this reason that there are lots of earthquakes there.
So getting back to my point. (I sound like a crazy old man going on about his bout with tuberculosis in the 50s) The contact point of both edges of the crust along the Western side of the Americas sollide, and inevitably, one edge will slide beneath the other. THe one that goes beneath the other is pushed into the core of the earth where it is melted and will eventually be spewn out through the MOR.
So, because of this cycle, we cannot really know the exact age of the earth, except that it is at least as old as the oldest things found on it.

Many of the distant stars don't exist yet the light they sent out is still traveling. I've read the earth was 3.8 billion years old. The earth would have to be younger than the meteriorites becuase the earth was formed from a collection of circulating meterioties that accumulated until the accumulation created significant gravity creating the spherical shape. Greater gravity caused the inner meteriorites to heat and melt forming the large core and mantle of the earth. Where the meteriotires came from in the first place is a real question.

It is about a day older than it was the last time this question was posed here.
The Bible allows for the earth to be billions of years old in Genesis 1:1; science states it is more than 4½ billion but probably less than 14 billion years.

Scientific estimates or guesses; universe or heavens 20 billion years old, earth 4.6 billion years old, moon 200 to 300 million years younger than earth, dinosaur extinction 65 million years ago, Ice Age 2.5 million years ago.

the earth is about 4 billion years old and the the universe about 15 billion years old. i just thought I'd provide you with a couple of sites that will refute the pseudo-scientific mumbo jumbo you will get in reply to this question, regarding the variable speed of light, the way Noah's flood caused sedimentary layers and how volcanoes fully explain the rest of the build up of geological strata.

HI Gorgeous, you seem to have answered your own question ;)
Anyway - that 6,000 year old thing comes from the over simplifications that fundamentalist/evangelical Christians promote.
For some reason they can't comprehend the concept of a truly omnipotent god figure... and make up wacked out ideas to prove other wacked out ideas...
cie la vie you know?
Peace,
-dh
oh and very well written.

Did you study the "science" that gave them that 4.5 billion year figure? A man I knew took a turtle shell in for testing (He knew the turtle had died two years before) and they "dated" it as 30 million years old. It is well established that the magnetic field is decreasing by 1/2 every 1500 years. If that is a steady change (and it is a basic tenet of "evolutionism" that things continue approximately the same), then if you figure back 9,000 years, the magnetic field would be 64 times as strong as it now is, and life on earth would not be possible. DO THE MATH!! Don't be a sheep!

well science suggests that the earth is 4.5 billion years old while religious creationists believe the earth to only be 6,000 or so years old

Last July the temperature was about 80F degrees, Today ( January ) it is about 20F degrees. Clearly the temperature decreases at an average rate of about 10F each month. assuming humans cannot survive at about 140F we can safely conclude the earth is only about one year old.
Well this made as much sense as the stupid magnetic field argument a creationist guy before me ( hasse john ) made anyway.

God created the light 90% of the way to earth when he created the universe. Duh. Its right in Geneses! It says he created light! SO clearly that means that he created it in a way that people would see. And God never intended for people to measure the distance to stars in the first place, it is clearly a sin. Astronomers are doing the devil's work. Carl Sagan was the Antichrist. Here's a cut and paste bible chapter vaguely backing me up:
Did I nail it?
