Yes, there is a definite difference. People from NYC don´t pronounce their "r"s and Californians overpronounce them There´s a bunch of other differences but you´d have to hear it to understand it.

Not only ois the accent different, but some of the slang is different also, as you have read in previous posts. People from LA tend to seem to relax their mouth more when they speak. If just hearing the NYC accent, you might think that the people are quite harsh. People from NYC are also said to have a bit of whine in their voice. I am sure that you could find some NYC radio station on the net to hear a native NYker speak. The same would be true for a person from LA. The letter R and the vowells are pronounced differently. I have noticed that the NYC accent is a bit more choppy. Maybe, i it has more of a nasal quality to it. Not as nasal as people from Wisconsin, but that is another question.

Honestly, Los Angeles doesn't have much of an accent. The whole "surfer" thing is a pretty much a cliche. Of course there are people that speak like that, having lived in many, many cities, I'd say that Angelenos speak the most "standard" English I've heard.

Honestly, if anything, the "Los Angeles" accent is probably English with a little bit of a Mexican accent. About half of L.A.'s population is Hispanic, and while many are not 1st generation, it is a very common accent/cadence to hear.

Yes. I have moved around alot and no matter where you go people have a different accent. Native New Yorkers are known to have the most distinguishable accent I think besides the people from the southern regions of the U.S. Although I am a native from Chicago and I have traveled places and have been told that i have a funny accent by people from as close as Michigan and Indiana. They seem to know right off I'm from somewhere else.

Oh yeah, big difference. The New York accent is more aggressive, slow, and low-pitched ("Aaa, what yoz doing? Ah'm walkin here!") and the Los Angeles/Valley accent is more relaxed, fast, and high-pitched ("Like, ohmahgaw, I can totally not believe he just did that! Duuude, whatever!")
