There are good and bad aspects to it, but the US will not have one again unless it becomes involved in major combat operations against a large country (China?). This is simply because the military does not want a draft.
One of the best points trainers can make is that everyone in the military is here voluntarily. It puts everyone on equal footing, and certainly benefits morale.
There are only two benefits I can think of from a draft: numbers and shared responsibility. The easiest and fastest way to drastically increase the size of the military is obviously through a draft. Shared responsibility means that everyone (well, every male age 18-25 anyways) will equally share the burden of fighting America's wars.
In my opinion, the negatives outweigh the positives as long as the military can handle its taskings with a volunteer service. Not everyone drafted would be vehemently opposed to serving, but enough would to exacerbate training issues and threaten morale.
As far as politicians go, the only one I know of asking for a draft is a Democrat, seeking it for political reasons. My impression is he thinks that would force the American public to become more pacifist, less willing to sacrifice those conscripted into service than the willing volunteers.

Todays Army Generals are all from the Vietnam days, They all remember the deadbeats and losers that were coming in from the draft and that is why all of the services will do anything to prevent a draft ever happening again. With all the plans in operation now. it is highly unlikely that we will ever see one again.

There isn't a military draft. The military doesn't want one. The majority of Americans don't want one. A few politicans in DC do though.
Personally I oppose one and hope it will never be re-implemeted.

I think it is so bad that if the government sent out draft slips 90% of the people who get one will laugh, tear it up and throw it away, at least with this war. Then good luck prosecuting all those people.

i don't think we should go back to the draft, but i wish there was a way, like israel, to have everyone serve our country in some way for a few years after they get out of school. I think it would benefit all.
p.s. you may want to use spell check next time.

it's a bad idea First of all the Navy,Marines,Army,Air-force,and all the other branches DO NOT WANT THEM because they don't want to be there in the first place. how would you like to have a bunch of people working for you that don't care one way or another about any thing. esp.the armed services

I think you should forget about it. It won't happen unless CONGRESS approves it and that's just not going to happen with the DEM's in charge. So go to sleep knowing there is NO DRAFT IN YOUR FUTURE!!!!!!!!!

I would support a draft if we were under attack. But if they were to enact a draft so that we can go around doing thy bidding of one Mr. George, then we're all gonna die.
