i have shimano LX hydro brakes on my mtb and then seemed very loose when i went riding yesterday (it was about 25degrees) i screwed in the adjuster as far as possible but not much better modulation. i left my bike in the basement over night and the brakes tightened up quite a bit - to the point that is satisfactory to me.

why do they seem to give way to more throw, then get tighter like that? is it just the cold weather or are there other factors to consider?

You have moisture in your system.

sup dude? all i know is ive had bad experiences with Shim. LX stuff. In the summer when its REALLY hot, i mean real hot, my disk brakes will catch just a little because the heat makes the fluid expand just a little but once i start riding it goes away. It could be the cold and could also be other factors, id take it to a lbs and get a pro. opinion if its really anoying. the stuff in your lines should be the same as whats in a car and cars brakes dont act much different in the winter.
try bleeding the lines, might be air or something else in there.

Hydraulic brakes can "act up" when it gets very cold. You mentioned that when you left it in your basement overnight (where it warmed back up), things kind of got back to normal. That was temperature related. I wouldn't worry too much about it at this point.
