You can use the card to store information, but cameras typically include a transfer program that is designed to only transfer files the camera uses (images, movies, etc).

However, if you have a memory card reader, which can be purchased at WalMart or CompUSA, you can use the card to store other information as well.

More than likely this will not interfere with the camera's operation.

Just make sure you do not use any of the folders the camera has placed on the memory stick for storage. The camera may want to re-format information if it sees data it cannot interpret

You should always be able to access externally-added files on a memory card that's inserted in a digital camera. Before plugging the camera into your laptop, open up My Computer. When you plug it in, look for a new icon that pops up under "Devices with Removable Storage". Your computer identifies your camera's memory card or on-board storage as an external drive (just like a USB flash drive), and this is it. Open the folder, find the file that you placed on it from a different computer, and cut/copy and paste it to your laptop. It's that simple.

However, it's a lot simpler to just be able to plug your SD card directly into the laptop, though it sounds like yours does not have a built-in card reader. In addition to the standard possibilities of getting a Type II PC Card adapter, or a USB card reader, my favorite choice is to use SanDisk Ultra II SD Plus, which fold in half to become usable as a standard USB flash drive and read/write five times faster than they do through the SD card interface. And they'll work on any computer that has a basic USB port. No more need to haul the data cable around with you on vacation (I'm not even sure where mine is anymore).

Yea you should be able to just connect the camera to your laptop using the usb cord that came with the camera. When you connect it, the computer should recognize it and ask you if you want to open up the folder of files. Click yes, and the powerpoint or whatever files are on the sd card should appear in the folder on your screen.

it depends on the makes and the model, some digital camera can do that. but some won't read your file and you might ended up having corrupted file on your card. try experimenting with your card and camera, it won't hurt( if something went wrong, just format the card). i've tried using my sony digital camera and it works, but it doesn't works on my nikon digital camera.
