If a mother has as really ulgy child, so ugly there is no denying it and she knows it. If the mom tells the daughter she is beautiful just to get her to stop crying, is this lie a sin? as in bearing false witness against your neighbor.

Yes it is a sin. But it's not what's on the outside that counts it's whats on the inside. Because if you are a child of God you are beautiful in God's eyes.

Your not a parent are you? Regardless, to a mother her child is the most beautiful in the world. I believe that is where the saying, "A face only a mother could love", would come into play.

A mother will always think her child is beautiful. There is more to beauty than what you can physically see. I'm sure the mother would mean it with all of her heart.

I thought "bearing false witness against your neighbour" referred to not reporting your neighbours as evading their taxes, so you can steal the man's wife as he is carted off to jail, all courtesy of you and your lies for self gain.
I am pretty sure there are no rules on if you choose to inform your child that they are ugly or not. To you, she really may be beautiful.

It's no lie because the truth is we are all very beautiful creatures inside or our spirit selves. Some of us are good looking and some are not in this life but our true, eternal selves are all very beautiful.

There are places in the Bible where people lied for what was right. When the government was killing babies some said they didn't have babies when they did to not have them killed. I believe Rahab the prostitute lied and said no one was in her room when some Israelite spies were in there and she is a part of Jesus' lineage. The point is that apparently there are certain instances where lying is helping accomplish justice or mercy. It's kinda strange.

most (if not all) mother's really think their children are beautiful (inside and out), even if they are less than perfect.. they are perfect to their mom no matter what. so she wouldn't be lying when she says they are beautiful... she believes it to be so.
