Canned soups generally contain LARGE amounts of sodium. Some brands like Progresso have less than Campbell's, but you've got to check the labels. The high salt content of canned soups can cause bloating (water retention), which can lead to high blood pressure in some people.

Soups are very good additions to ones diet. They usually contain much of the vegetables and protein needed for good nutrition in one dish. Adding potatoes, or pasta can add carbs. Even the volume of liquid helps fill you without a lot of calories.

If you want to add more soups to your diet, you should think about making your own. You can buy prepackaged soup mixes where soups or dried beans are found. I don't mean Lipton's. I mean mixes that you add your own vegetables, and/or meats to. They contain seasonings, but with much less salt than canned soups. There are also thousands of recipes on the internet. You could invest in a crock pot, start them before you leave for work, and have soups ready when you get home.

Look for bad stuff in the mix- sodium, high-fructose corn syrup, too many chemicals, too much fat or calories, etc., but many canned soups are pretty decent.

They are hot, can be gotten in decent portion sizes, and reasonably filling, so make a nice foundation to a healthy meal. There is usually enough fat and such to satisfy the brain and stomach that you are full.

As a rule of thumb, the clearer the soup base, the better for you it is. Consummes are usually good (if not too salty) and creams are the worst.

I read all the labels religiously. I love the taste of Campbell's Select Soups and some more, but I really prefer to make my own out of my own ingredients. That way I know exactly what is in it. By the way, I am one of those "lucky" people who loses too much sodium and so I have no worries about the sodium content of foods. I am also notorious for not using enough salt in my cooking! So for me, they are healthy.

I agree some are good, I like progressive. You just really need to check the label and make sure you are not consuming more than 20% of your daily intake of Sodium in one serving.

i think they're ok, better than eating a burger or deep-fried chicken. it's still vegetables ( or whatever) but how much nutrition is still left after 6 months on the shelf is a different matter. And then don't taste that nice either.

They generally have way too much sodium to be a regular part of your diet.

Too salty, otherwise I don't see any issue.
