I have a two and a half year old son, and I've been hearing from people that if I have interest in exploring schools outside of our district, or even not in the public circuit, I should start now....is now too soon? He's a July baby, so he'd probably start Kindergarten the month after he turns 5.

I don't think its ever too soon. Private schools sometimes have waiting lists of a year, some may ask that your son have spend some time in preschool or have some sort of admission test. If you find out the requirements now, you can start preparing.
For public schools, you will have to check out their performance, find out the admission requirements. It takes time, because the procedures are complicated and there is no help out there. Worst case scenario, you may decide that your best option is to move to a district with better public schools, in which case you definetly want some advance notice!

Depending on what kind of school you want. Montesorri schools I thik have a waiting list, so best start now. If its your public school, there isnt a waiting list. Just register him. I had my son in school since he was 2 and he is one bright little boy now. Never to soon to start. Call up some schools and ask if there is a waiting list and get the tuition prices too. Some are $$$$. Good luck

What's wrong with the district? Is he is preschool now? Look into a private school with in your area, a Catholic or Christian school? I think as long as in preschool now, relax but I dont know the details of issue w/ district and why there would be a waiting list that is 3 yrs long in a private school?

Dont you plan to send him preschool? Many preschool situations are right in the same school as Kindergarten. I would be checking into schools now for future consideration. Pre school is really important for kids I suggest at least one year pre school before Kindergarten.
