I went to the site of Emily Post (One of the famous etiquette geniuses) and they said:
How soon should I send a gift?
Preferably, send the gift to the bride before the wedding or to the couple soon thereafter. In some regions gifts are brought to the reception and placed on a special table. Contrary to a current rumor that you have a year to send a gift, it really should be sent right away or within three months of the wedding.

lololol judging from the percentage of marriage failures these days, wait a couple of years and there is a fifty-fifty chance you can save yourself the trouble of sending one at all.
Seriously though, I think it would look pretty weird to be sending somebody a wedding gift after they had already been married several weeks. If you are intending to give a gift, do it directly. If you can't afford what you'd have liked to give them, just send a token of your well-wishes, and remember that it is, after all, the thought that matters, not the monetary value.

3 months. A year is a myth, and very disrespectful.

If this couple mean something to you then they wont care how long you take--really--because its the nice act of giving--and they will appreciate it regardless--
