I understand that there are a very small number of people who's depression is completely linked to chemical imbalances. However, I have been depressed and it wasn't because some chemicals were messed up in my brain; it was because my life sucks. Why, if that's the case, would you want to use drugs to make somebody "happy"? I'd rather fix whatevers wrong in my life than have some stupid drugs pumping me full of emotions that aren't mine.

Medication can be used for reasons other then chemical. Consider a person who is so far down because of their life that they just can't pull themselves back up, they can't function because they dont see any point to it. Depression causes many reactions in the body and pain is one of them, sleep is also a very common escape for depression.
My point, you have to get to the counsellor before you can get help, if you cant function to get yourself out of the house to the appointment then you will not get better. If you are in pain and constantly tired then you can not function.
Medication can be used for a period of time to get you back on your feet.
I guess I see things differntly, I see a legal way to feel a bit better before I can get to the place in my life where I can work on my issues.
(my depression is both chemical and situational)

First of all, antidepressants do not "pump someone full of emotions." Antidepressants work on the chemical imbalance (it is still being discovered how yet, they just know it does). Yes, you might have been depressant because of something situational. But what if your depression was so bad (even though it was because of something situational) that you couldn't do the work it took to fix things? That's where an antidepressant can come into help. It can lift you out of the depression enough to where you can do the work to fix things. Sometimes drugs are needed and sometimes they aren't. If you're so certain that you are depressed only because your "life sucks" then why don't you just fix it and be happy?

Well sometimes the depths of someone's depression are just too deep for meditation. It may not be a chemical thing at the beginning, but then it becomes one. Antidepressants are like a safety net for your emotions that some people need or else they may go grab a gun or knife or pills to end the deep pain of depression by killing themselves.

You have obviously not been very depressed if you got yourself out of it without any help--chemical or theraputic. This sounds awfully close to what Tom Cruise is an expert at: thinking that everyone else in the world is just like him and that what works for him will work for anyone.

I understand that psychiatrists like to over-perscribe drugs as a cure-all. My former psych. experimented on me and I had to leverage to get off of the promotional drugs he had me on. He was an idiot, but not all psych.s are total f u c k ing pupets of the drug industry.

The idea of drugs was good in the beginning and has been corrupted, obviously. People should try to get off of the drugs if they are on them, but not be too afraid of using them to get themselves out of a hole.

That's it.

To answer your question there is people who have chemical imbalance and need to get their chemicals back in order so they can function properly.

Now in your case, if your life sucks, then only you can change that by doing something about it. My life sucks too, but I don't let it get me down, I do something about it and it gets better.

I don't believe depression is a chemical imbalance either. Having said that though, I wouldn't hesitate to take antidepepressants AND go to counselling at the same time. Sometimes you can't change your life by yourself. You need help. And pills are better than suicide. I wouldn't take antidepressants from my local doctor. Some made me "high". I would go to a psychiatrist if you are really depressed in case you are bipolar.

I view medication as a last resort. I did counseling first, went to my naturopath, who helped with nutritional imbalances, lost a ton of weight, exercised, stopped drinking alcohol, caffeine and most sugars....and when I still couldn't control my anxiety attacks, I did get medical help. I did the best I could and sometimes you just need assistance from medication. HOWEVER, I still work on the things that got me to this point, learn the lessons, take care of myself and try to lead a healthy life. I don't plan on being on meds forever.

First of all you learn what depression actually is? Depression starts with a thought. Brain becomes out of control and produces unwanted thoughts. Smaller and insignificant events of life, from whom we dont have good memories, appear on front screen of brain with more profound effects. We make those images huge. This disturbs physiology. If we use some addictive drugs or alcohol, this creates turmoil in our internal system. Consequently a toxic salt, named Leithium, release in our blood. This alters our mood, either towards depression or mania.

Now how to solve it:

First of all you should visit consellor, without wasting any time. Elaborate entire case and get advise.

Then visit your doctor. He will prescribe some leithum carbonate tablets or drug which will adjust your leithum level and your mood will be normal.

There are different theories in psychology. One theory is based on physical problems within the body meaning that every mental disorder is a symptom of some physical problem. Other theories are based on past experience, behavior, the enviornment you live in, ect. It bascily just depends on what theory you go by or what mixture of theories you believe is actually the right ones.

Drugs just help the drug companies make money -- they are not about helping patients deal with the underlying issues and problems in their lives.

One good reason: medication works. When people are born with anxiety disorders/depression (Tourette syndrome, obsessive compulsive disorder, ADHD), nothing helps but medicine. Nothing. There is no reason to be miserable when there is somthing to help.
