Why do you see "fireworks" when you rub your eyes?

I've always wondered that. Anybody know?

Whoa! You're rubbing way too hard, baby girl! It's only because you're mashing the cones and rods in your eyeballs and seeing residual refracted light. It could also be that I don't see the fireworks since I wear contacts and don't really rub my eys.

I didnt see anything close to fireworks.
