Is your mother ready for another dog? It's sweet of you to want to replace her baby, but make sure she is ready to take on the responsibility of a new one. That being said, is your mom by herself? If she is, think about a chihuahua. They are very loyal and loving. But they are generally one person dogs. Also, if you are looking for sweet and calm, check the shelters for an adult dog so your mom doesn't have to go through the housebreaking and teething stage of a puppy.
Good luck to you and your mom. She's lucky to have such a caring child!

I have a greyhound. She sleeps practically all day, and is very sweet, not to mention QUIET. The only time she makes a sound is when she has to go outside. They call them "60 mile per hour couch potatoes", and I have definitely found this to be true. despite what you might think, they don't require a high level of exercise, though they do enjoy any walks they can get. You can adopt a retired racigng greyhound, like I did, and then you'll be saving a life, as well. We got ours through NJGAP, the New Jersey Greyhound Adoption Program. They are big dogs, so they do eat more than yorkies. Feel free to email me if you have any questions. :)

Any dog can be trained to be quiet. I breed mini dachshunds and great danes and they all know what "Quiet" means. I actually had someone come to my home over the weekend and commented on how quiet my doxies were.
But they are also over 3 years old.
There are some breeds that are noted as being quiet, such as BorderTerriers, Shiba Inu's. There are also breeds that are prone to barking and are not calm such as herding dogs (border collies, shelties, aussies, etc) sporting dogs such as labs, goldens are hyper till they reach adulthood, and some, if not bred well will be hyper all their lives.
I suggest looking up different breeds you know your mom is interested in, make a note of the ones that might say something about them being quiet, calm, etc. Then find a reputable breeder, not a back yard breeder. OR contact a breed rescue and let them know what you are looking for. You will find a dog that is already housebroken, spayed or neutered, won't chew everything up and you help make room in that rescue so the next dog in need comes in.

Golden Retrievers are my favorite dogs. I've had three already and I haven't found anything wrong with them yet.

To have the best golden I would make sure that they're AKC registered. The AKC registered ones don't have problems that the mutts.

There are two different types of goldens; a golden golden, and a copper penny. A copper penny is more of a showy dog and I prefer them over a regular golden.

They need lots of love and attention. They also make great hunting dogs and are very quiet and kind. They are great with kids.

For a calmer golden I would get an adult puppies take lots of patience.

One buying a dog for someone else is NOT a good idea. Make up a gift certificate or buy a collar and wrap it. Present that to your mom as a gift and tell her when she's ready you'll go together to pick up a new dog.

Secondly, no dog breed is ever known as "quiet". So if you're looking for a sweet quiet dog, go buy a stuffed animal.

I wouldn't get your mom a dog as a gift. What you can do is get her a collar, leash, some dog toys, and a book on puppy/dog training. Put this all in a basket for her and give it to her with a coupon for the dog of her choice from a local shelter or rescue.

Once she's ready, go with her to pick out a dog and pay the adoption fee. This way, you can be absolutely sure that she's getting the kind of dog she wants because she's picking it out!

Any breed has the potential to be calm. It's like asking for a child which is calm some are and some aren't. It has nothing to do with the breed. Go to your local Humane Society and find a nice mutt which needs a good home.

Dogs are all sweet in their own ways. Yorkies are wonderful lapdogs and I'm sure your mom would love another one. They don't generally bark as much as some dogs do. Temperments are different though in animals just like humans. Every yorkie will be different. Whatever dog you feel your mom has room for in her home and yard and whatever dog you feel your mom will love.

Labs are notoriously known for being both sweet and very quiet - but they are LARGE dogs to care for. Greyhounds are also very sweet and very quiet - but they have extra particular health concerns to look out for.
How about a cat? If Neutered and male - will be quiet and sweet.

Bichon frise's are very quiet and sweet. They love to cuddle and best of all, do not shed!!! You may be thinking of something smaller, but then I'd recommend a bichon cross. Beagle crosses have always hit a soft spot with me as well.
