How can you get umlauts, the German B's etc? Thank you.

Make sure NumLock is on, hold down the Alt key, and type the appropriate number on the numeric keypad. (If you don't have a numeric keypad, e.g. on a laptop, you'll probably have to do more keyboard gymnastics, such as Fn keys and such. In that case, it might be easier to use the Character Map.)

ö = 148 or 0246
Ö = 0214
ü = 129 or 0252
Ü = 0220
ß = 0223 (and it's a "sharp S", not a B)

alt 147 = ô
alt 129 = ü
alt 132 = ä
