you want better performance put more memory in its cheep to buy .a second hard drive only if you have the room external ones are just as good and are portable i can switch mine between my two lap tops and desk top in a second

You can use another disc to back up your data. But if you use both HDDs simultaneously it degrades the system performance.
My system:
Intel Pentium 4 3.00 GHz HTT
Segate 160 GB 7200 RPM SATA
1024 MB (1 GB) of RAM

Depends, do you need more space? You can save big files, like movies and stuff to a DVD or CD. Documents you think are important and you don´t want to loose them in case of a hardware failure are also good for back up. You can also use the windows Backup utility to backup your system state, which means that in case of a system failure, you can use this Diskette/Cd disk to restore the system´s files, registry and personal documents.

Get a Maxtor 300 GIG. But do not use the DDO software, it will mess your system. Use Parition Magic if you need to, but the Maxtor 300 and 500 are at really good costs

Yes, Install vista on the second hard drive and dual boot.
Use vista for most tings and xp when vista doesn't have the drivers.

Yes I would add another Drive as a backup drive.
You think you never need a backup until something goes wrong.
