My roomate just bought a cat and it meows really loud and annoys me and the other roomate in the house. Other than a muzzle (kidding) what are some ways in which I can help teach the cat not to meow?

So. you have a talker.do you?--some cats are very vocal and i do not know of anything you can do about it.
it has fresh water and food ? some cats hate to see the bottom of the food dish.-- NO HITTING OR SLAPPING that will only make matters worse.
you can try a squirt gun but do not chase it with it. they learn some things very fast and will run and hide every time you reach for the gun-- the idea is not to let the cat know where the water is coming from-- only that it gets wet when it meows.
why not just chill and enjoy the conversation.
i have a talker as well-- if it gets too annoying i give it cat nip-- but be careful , if you do this all the time the cat will associate meowing with the cat nip-- then you have a bigger problem.

Even though it's not your cat check to see if it has enough food and water. Also, pick the cat up and hold it. Some cats meow just to try and get attention. I know my kitty does that all the time. If that doesn't work, you just have a talker on your hands. There's really nothing you can do about it. Like everyone is saying, some cats are quite and some cats are just big loud talkers.

There isnt a whole lot you can do about a meower. Usually cats meow like this when they want attention. Shelter cats can be very stressed and worried at first....they need extra love and interaction. Also some cats who were seperated from their mothers too soon can be very needy adults. Dont get angry...just pet him ! As for the vomiting, etc...change his food! I have a cat who can only eat premium foods with no fish product in them....or she vomits, etc... I took her to the vet and she was put through a string of tests, got shots, antibiotics....nothing helped. Turns out she just needed different food ! Dont feed them cheap stuff !

I saw an interesting show on PBS once that said cats actually only meow to humans, and not at each other. They figure out really quickly it's a way to get you to respond and to do things for them...pet them, feed them, etc. It may be that it picked that up at its former home. You might try simply to completely ignore it when it meows and only feed it and pet it when it's being quiet. This may help reinforce the idea that it gets things when it DOESN'T meow. It is a cat, however, so don't be too optimistic.

You can't teach a cat not to meow. Certain breeds are more vocal than others, but if a cat likes to meow, get used to it.
I have 3 Siamese and they are one of the more vocal breeds. Mine are meowing all day, sometimes all 3 at once.
It usually just means they want attention or to be petted.

My cat meows annoyingly load and if you tell him to shutup he meows louder!
It probably wants something so make sure it has food ans water, and open the door to see if it wants to go outside if it's an outdoor cat. f it's none of these then maybe he wants attention just hug him for a bit! Always shuts my cat up!

Sounds like the cat is in heat. The only way to get them to stop being so loud is to get it fixed. other wise you have a vocal cat who just likes to talk. i've never heard of training a cat not to meow.
sorry

Sounds like that cat is either needing neutering as it's in heat or to be picked up and given attention.

Give it some attention. Pet it, brush it, etc, and it should stop.
