I belong to this group and this girl is talking about the bad storm that came threw here and knocked over her tree and its going to cost about 1200 to chop it up and hall it away. She made the comment that they were going to wait because then they would have extra money. Isnt that ridiculas?

Yes, you shouldn't excpect money for renewing your vows. You got plenty when you got married. I didn't know people had receptions for this. Just like you shouldn't expect bridal showers for your second marriage or baby showers for your second baby. (unless your first kid is at least 10)

If I am understanding this correctly--your friend and her husband are renewing their vows --and they are having a reception--so they have what set up a money tree or money dance?? Or does she think that people are going to bring gifts and if so some people do just give a card and money--but for the most part when people renew their vows its a celebration --that they have invited others to witness and share--to make the day more memorable--and usually on the invitation it states "NO GIFT"S PLEASE" After all they have been married for some time--and the gifts for the original wedding is to help the NEW couple get on their feet with household goods etc.
So my opinion on this expecting gifts and or money is more on the greedy side--why would people be expected to bring a second gift to the couple?? What is she thinking?? I am wondering how the persons invited are feeling about the "double dipping" situation??

I could have read this question incorrectly but it sounds to me as though the girl is putting the horse before the cart.
Instead of wanting to renew their vows because they really care for each other, they are renewing their vows to get gifts and money. Or something even more ridiculous would be saying, "Hey, let's have a child because we will get gifts!!" Both for totally the wrong reasons. She is only concerned about the material things and not the real value of things.

Her motives for renewing these most binding vows are slightly skewed.

People renew their vows for a variety of reasons but this is the first time for me on this one.
Usually it's because they want to share it with their families as they may not have had a big wedding; they've had a bad patch & want to reaffirm their love, or there's been an indescretion of some sort & they want a fresh start. The reason is only theirs & very personal.

She might, if she's lucky, get a gift on the order of a housewarming, but usually gifts are not bestowed on the couple.

That sounds extremely greedy and shallow to expect gifts of money for a renewal of vows. That shows poor taste and a lack of class. A renewal of vows is for the couple, even more so than the first wedding; people came together to watch it become official, and gave them gifts for well-wishing. It doesn't work that way if they want to come out with the editor's cut two-disc special later!

If you are renewing your vows and the family and friends were not at the original wedding then yes gifts are in order. If they are just renewing their vows because they have been married a while then no gifts should not be expected.

If they are renewing their vows in celebration of a wedding anniversary such as 25th, they might expect anniversary gifts -- especially if they are throwing a big party (reception).

Expecting anything just leads to disappointment, if you don't expect something and then you get it, it's a nice surprise. I think it is rude to expect money.
