My DVD player plays Divx, Mpeg4 etc (brand new LG player)... I've been trying to convert some avi files that will play. I used DivX converter (official Mac) and the sound doesn't work. I used ISquint (Optimized for TV) and it created MP4(?) and not Mpeg4 files? There is an option for H.262 Encoding? Questions::: What is the difference between Mpeg4 and MP4 files? What Mac converter can I use that will just output standard files that will work? Why won't the dvd player play mp4 files but it WILL play standard MPG's???

Your confusion is understandable. I'll go over a few things first, so you understand my answer. There are three terms you should be aware of. Video codecs, audio codecs, and container formats. You can find a pretty big list at Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_codecs and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Container_format_%28digital%29 ). Forget movies, technically a video stream is just video, no sound or anything. A video has an associated codec (or how the video data is digitally stored). Some popular codecs are MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and H.264. Remember, all they are is just a format for the video. No audio, nothing. You have the same idea for audio files as well. You've heard of MP3? That's an audio codec. MP3, AC3, Vorbis, and AAC are well known audio codecs.

Finally, we get to containers. Containers put video and audio together. Let's say you had a movie that had both English and Italian dubs. The container would have the video stream, and then two audio streams (one for English, one for Italian). The video stream has its own codec. Each audio stream has its own codec. And then there's the container.

Ok, so you need to know what your DVD player supports. You need to know what container it supports, what video codecs it supports, and what audio codecs it supports. It's a pain, yes, but that is what you must deal with.

"My DVD player plays Divx, Mpeg4"
Ok, this tells you that your DVD player supports MPEG-4. I mentioned it above as a video codec. Now, you need to know what audio codecs it supports, and what container it supports.

"I used DivX converter (official Mac) and the sound doesn't work."
Ok, but the video did? That means the converter got the video codec right, and the container right, but not the audio codec.

"I used ISquint (Optimized for TV) and it created MP4(?) and not Mpeg4 files?"
MP4 is a container format. The container might have had MPEG-4 video, but it cannot be played because the MP4 container isn't understood by your DVD player.

"There is an option for H.262 Encoding?"
You mean H.264. H.264 is a video codec.

"What is the difference between Mpeg4 and MP4 files?"
MP4 is a container. MPEG-4 is a video codec.

"What Mac converter can I use that will just output standard files that will work?"
I'm sorry, but I'm not a Mac guy. There's a number of free video converters, that are great, but I don't think they work on Windows. Or if they do, I don't know which ones work.

"Why won't the dvd player play mp4 files but it WILL play standard MPG's"
Because MP4 and MPG is different.

Ok, you're probably pulling your hair out by now, trying to figure out how to get it to work. We need a few pieces of information from you, about your DVD player. What containers does it support, what video codecs does it support, and what audio codecs does it support? Also, you mentioned that you want to put AVI files on these DVDs?

If you don't know the above information, you need to tell us the model for the DVD player.

attempt DVD Rip. it is a great, gentle-weight loose device which will rip your DVD's right into a video format. i'm uncertain if it is going into MP4 format, yet whilst not, you may constantly use AVS Video Converter 6, yet another loose software which will convert your documents into in spite of you want, extremely MP4 (iPod) format. i'm hoping this allows! P.S. if this wasn't what you have been searching for, you may attempt Handbrake (it is for homestead windows AND Mac, so do not situation) i've got under no circumstances used it before, even with the undeniable fact that curiously to be precisely what you're searching for. click the 2nd link in sources.
