my daughters bday is coming up, we would like to get her a guitar. she has shown an interest in learning to play. my question is, should i get a guitar that i saw at toysrus(about $65) or should i go to a music store to get her one? my points are that the one at the store was cute and girly, and also it is cheap enough that if she doesnt end up loving to play the guitar, it wont be so bad, basically just to see how she does. but will make a difference to buy a guitar from the shop. whats the difference and what should i look for? thnx

We bought our 8 yr old one from Kmart. It was only 20 dollars. It's the same one as they have at toys r us. We got the accoustic one. He's learning on his own because we bought him software too. I think it's good to start with a cheap one, my son's sounds pretty good. Then if she shows a real interest in it then she can get a more expensive one.

We got my younger son a guitar when he was 8, which we bought from a friend for $100. It was a kid-sized electric with an amp. He still plays it and he's almost 10, now. My 10 year old wanted a bass last year, so I visited Guitar Center, which was VERY expensive, but the sales guy did answer my questions. I ended up finding one on line for a much better price. I think we spent about $150 for the bass and the amp, new. It wasn't top of the line, but it was perfect for a 10 year old just starting out. Just get an idea of what you wand and what your budget is, then shop around. I wouldn't buy the one from Toys R Us, though. Get something of decent quality but don't spend a fortune if you aren't sure your daughter will still be into it in a year. Lookd into used, as well. You can always upgrade later.

Don't waste your money on a toy guitar. It won't sound right, and will be frustrating for your daughter to play. Are you planning for her to take lessons? If not, you can pretty much guarantee that she will lose interest, because she won't know how to do anything but make noise. The girly guitar might be cute, but the quality is much more important. You can find used guitars at many music stores, that aren't terribly expensive, and they can also point you in the right direction in finding a guitar teacher. Good luck!

My husband teaches guitar to kids. His suggestion to parents is this...Buy a First Act guitar from Wal Mart they run from $20 to $30. This is an actual guitar, not a toy. I have seen pink ones, ones shaped like an apple, al sort of different ones. Get her that one then get her like 5 guitar lessons. If she enjoys it and sticks with it THEN buy her a better guitar. Daisy Rock has beautiful girls guitars, (Hannah Montana/ Miley Cyrus has an endorsement from them) they are a little on the pricey side but they last.

If you plan on getting her lessons don't get her something "cute and girly". Go to a reputable music store and talk to them about what type to get her IF you plan on her taking lessons. If you just want her to have something to play with go to Wal*Mart and get her a toy guitar.

Get her the music lessons for her b-day rent the guitar from the teacher until you see if her interest will continue this will give you time to investigate type and price.

Stick with the $65 one and wait to see how she does with it. If she's really serious about it then you can buy a more expensive one later.
You just should not invest a whole lot in something until you see how serious your child is.
