British Citizens
British Citizens, who are travelling as tourists or on a business trip (duration of less than 6 months), do not require a visitor's visa when entering Canada, but should hold a valid passport and a return ticket.
Consulting the following is recommended as some British Passports with certain endorsements may require visas:

If your visiting your passport is enough, that entitles you to stay up to 6 months before you have to applie for an extention, if you plan on working or looking for work, there are procedures there, I worked in the Hotel/Restaurant industry and worked with a number of British citizens, and asked them about it, seems it is the same ther for us Canadians, check with the Canandian Consulate for more detials, visa are only required for non- commonwealth countrys.

No only your passport, so long as you are not planning on staying longer than 6 months, and not working over there.
Depending on whereabouts you are going in canada depends on the cot of living. Generally speaking it is a bit cheaper than the uk, especially with the pound being so strong at the moment.

No as said before you don't need a visa. If you are going to toronto and want a funky/cool hotel to stay at I would recommend the Gladstone Hotel. It is in Queen Street West area. It is a real up and coming area and the hotel is a restored landmark. check it out on their website.
