Awesome idea!

I did a drive to the East coast a few years back. We didn't make any plans for accomodation. But we did get a brochure for each of the provinces (tourism.ca?) which gave must see places, and accomodations.

Where to stay - We literally just called B&B along the route that we decided to take that day (using the book). If they didn't have room, they were alwasy able to suggest an alternate. Bring a tent just in case - but we didn't need it. We just felt like we brought it, so we should use it so we camped out one night. We used a hotel the night after using the tent. Don't bring a trailer - its' not worth the extra gas expense.
Don't get on each others nerves - Being in a car/close quarters with even your best friend can be trying after a few days. Make sure you both are able to just take a book, go for a hike, beer or whatever, on your own. You would be much better off if you take the time to be apart - even if it's for an hour. Also - be flexible. Plans fall through. Expect nothing. If you are tired - go to sleep. If you are cold, put a sweater on.

Cash. What we did - and it worked for us but may not for everyone - was split EVERYTHING. We kept a running balance of all - and I mean all (grab me a bottle of water?) expenses. She would pay, I would pay - it didn't matter. We kept track of how much and who paid it. At the end of the trip, we tallied up, and settled the score. I swear, we were within $10 of even, so I gave her $5.

Photos - we are both photo buffs. At the start of the trip - we both agreed to take every and all pictures, and to share every and all pictures after the trip. It was a riot. Same place, same experience - different photo. GREAT idea.

Journal - we also kept a journal of our trip. Who we met, what we ate, what we saw, etc. When we met for lunch, settle the tally, trade photos, we looked at the pictures and read the journal for the first time. It took us 3 hours to get through the 2 week trip.

I did a drive across from Waterloo, Ontario to Vancouver in 2002 with another friend. We drove my 98 Nissan Sentra. We usually book ahead with International Youth Hostels. For example, we would book the Calgary Hostel before leaving the Saskatoon Hostel. We did bring a tent with us since we camped outdoors in Jasper National Park. We did the whole trip in about 2 and half weeks. Pretty fun. The good thing about Youth Hostels is that you can meet other people there and have parties with them... some of them, of course, are from other countries... Make friends... One day you may visit them in their native country if you are into travelling....

Just 1 thought... a trailer would allow you more room to take your stuff, and cost much less per night for accommodation, motels and hotels are expensive in travel season. With a trailer, you can stay outside a town, leave the trailer, drive into town for fun, and go back to the trailer to sleep.

Also it is cheaper to cook your own meals, which you can do with a trailer, than constantly eat out.
