I'm in Michigan, and they're not illegal here. They became legal here I think in 1994, and I only remember that because my boss was all psyched about it and went right out and got one.

Several reasons are commonly given to explain why ferrets have been declared illegal. These include:

"Ferrets are wild animals." This is untrue; ferrets have been domesticated for thousands of years.
"There's no rabies shot for ferrets, so they'll spread this disease." In fact, IMRAB-3 has been USDA-approved for ferrets since 1991, and no human has ever contracted rabies from a ferret.
"Ferrets are dangerous, vicious biters." According to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control, a ferret is thousands of times less likely to bite than a dog is.
"A feral ferret population could destroy the environment." There are no feral domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo) populations in North America; the wild cousin to the domestic ferret, the black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes), is one of the most endangered species in the world.

In the United States, as of the year 2000, ferrets are legal in 48 states. California and Hawaii have declared ferrets illegal in the entire state.

I believe ferrets are only illegal in California and maybe Hawaii, due to stubborn, closed-minded people who refuse to look at the blatant facts about them and instead deem them as "wild animals" when in fact they have been domesticated for thousands of years. Grr, it really grinds my gears. OF ALL PLACES FOR THEM TO BE ILLEGAL! CALIFORNIA!? So to answer your question, no, there is not a good reason why ferrets are illegal.

One reason ferrets are illegal in some states is because some are aggressive. I have two ferrets and they are very different. One is sweet and loving and the another one is very aggessive. When I first got him he would lick my skin and then bite me. I used water to spray to make him stop and he eventually stop. But every once in while he will bite me and run!!!!

Strange. Here in Nebraska ferrets are not illegal. They arent the best choice for pets in my opinion. They smell, they bite, and they steal things.

They are illegal in some states because if they are accidentally released into the wild they can kill hundreds of birds and other endangered wildlife in a short amount of time.

They adapt to most climates, so they are hard to get rid of and become a pest.

hi, well where do you live? maybe your council/shire , has passed a law. but i have never heard of this. in australia we can't get some animals as pets, and thats quarantine reasons mainly.i always wanted a gerbil/hamster ,seem to be smarter than guinea pigs.
if you live in a torrens title flat? they sometimes have their own weird rules..
they are cute and funny, but they can also bite very, very, deeply in a fraction of a second too. have you considered a rat? they are more portable i find, and still a different pet.good luck!
