I am blind in one eye and have glaucoma in the other. I have the CNIB coming next week as they are concerned for my safety. I have walked into a tree a door more than a couple of times and fell down the stairs a month ago. I have social phobia and the thought of having to use a long cane is really bothering me. Should I get a guide dog? I am very experinced in animals.

I walked into the tree because I look to the ground to see if anything is in my way.

My parents both work at a Society for the blind. I’m sorry to say if you don’t use a cane you can not get a Seeing Eye dog. You have to be able to effectively use a cane in order to get a seeing eye dog. People who apply for a dog will have someone sent to their home to see if they can function independently with a cane in the home and outside the home. A lady that goes to the society my parents work at never wanted to use a cane but learned how when she learned she couldn’t get a seeing eye dog in till she could use her cane efficiently.

Getting a seeing eye dog is a good idea, most blind people who have gotten a seeing eye dog feel much more free and independent.

A guide dog would be great! The dog would also help with the social phobia. You need to go outside for you and the dog. Guide dogs are a wonderfull thing to have for multiple reasons. Contact your local Guide dogs for the blind and see what they can do for you. So excited for you!

Depends on how long/many shots into trees and doors you think you can take. I would suggest that if you are comfortable with a dog and not a cane....go with the dog.

Hope you can read this okay.

I think a guide dog would be a great choice. My nephew has CP with brain damage and he has a companion dog. Not only does the dog help him get around and assist him with different things, he has become a sweet friend for him. Good luck!!
