depending on the age of the toddler they might want to be considered as a big kid and tell them that big kids don't have pacifiers and that if they want to be a big kid then you can't have a pacifier sometimes this works for them if it doesn't then try dipping the pacifier in something that they don't like the taste of (that of course is not harmful) and when they put it in their mouth they won't like the taste and won't want it anymore. you might have to do it a couple of times until they get turned off of it. good luck and hope this works!!!

First of all how old is your toddler? I know this sounds funny but if they understand the concept of Santa and the Easter bunny, then this might work. I saw on an episode of Super Nanny there was a little girl who had pacifiers and would not under any circumstances give it up. So they had her put them all in a little bag with handles and hung it up outside on a tree for the "binky fairy" before she went to bed. When she got up the next day there was no more binky's and there was a toy the little girl really wanted. And according to them it worked. Your gonna have a tough time for the first week or so, because to them its a comfort. My daughter had hers until she was 3 then we got rid of it with a Ewww Binkys are Yucky. But it was still hard. Unfortunatly my 2 yr old sucks his thumb and I cant get him to stop. And that cant be taken away.

My daughter would not give hers up.........we tried the over the counter deterrent, we tried cutting the pacifier, we were told to cut the tip off and it would cause her to stop........wrong, we ended cutting it in half and she still used it up till the time she decided that she was too big for it, about the same time she was potty trained, she also quit taken naps and quit using the high chair, we quit treating her as a baby and started treating her as a toddler, and giving her more choices and she took the actions to give up her pacifier her bottle and sippy cup all within about 3 months......

It is true, if you take it away, you'll have some resistance for a few days but that's it. Easier said than done however. If your child uses it all the time, you might want to try to reduce it's use each day. Mine only uses her during naps and at bedtime, we take it out of her mouth in the morning and she doesn't mind being without it during the day. But I tried to take it away for good, but I gave up after the first sleepless night. You just have to be willing to wait it out. For a while I offered her a warm bottle of water at bedtime (she doesn't ever get milk in her crib) and that pacified her but I didn't stick with it. I've heard some have success with having the child themselves throw it away, or say it gets taken by a fairy for other kids who need them. Either way, I'm an advocate of making sure it's not in their mouth all day long, but if it's not interfering with their speaking, I plan on waiting a while more before I try to take it away from sleeping. My daughter is 19 months old by the way.

I know one mother who cut a slice off the end of the pacifier every day until there was nothing left to suck on.

I think you just have to take it. When my daughter was little she hated the garbage can and thought is was "nassy", so one day I dropped her pacifier in the garbage can and she would not even think of having it back.

well beside going cold turkey, my aunt broke her daughter of it by keeping it in boundries, at first the paci could not go outside of the car, and then it could not go out of the house, and then it could not go downstairs, and then it could not go out of her room and finally it could not leave the bed, then she was off of it. i know it seems like a long process, but its less traumatizing. i like the idea about chopping off the tip peice by peice and letting them suck on it till its nothing. lol
