i would refuse to fight for a war that seems hopeless

When is a war moral? And as far as illegal that is normally decided by lawyers or the victor. US troops have been fighting somewhere ever since are forefathers sent Cornwallis packing.
Since you believe that it is illegal and immoral I am sure you are no where near a recruiting station. Unless you stand outside and try and prevent others from serving a cause greater than themselves. It is fortunate to be born an American, you can protest your "own" government, insult and denouce your president, burn your flag, give aide support and comfort to people that want to kill you, just because you are able to voice your opinion, elect your represenatives even run for office yourself. You do not realize how many poeple on this planet will love to kill to have it as good as most americans have it.

If I thought it was illegal or immoral, I would not enlist, BUT if you are in the military already, you have no choice on whether to go or not. This is why joining the military should not be a light decision. you give some politicians the right to send you anywhere.

Following your line of thought, you believe that 9/11 was legal and moral. No matter what the reasons were for the US to go into Iraq, it's a different war than it was three years ago. Saddam is gone, the democracy, for whatever it's worth, is established, the enemy is the Islamic jihad, not Iraqi's killing Americans. The leader of this enemy is not bin Laden, but it is Ahmadinejad.

Islam declared war on the US, perhaps not in unison with bin Laden, but it has taken up their cause against the US. We must destroy this enemy, or we will be fighting him on our turf, again.

Personally, I don't find that acceptable, and if you do, you're a damn fool!

As a former military participant, I would look forward to sharpening my K-bar, as a weapon of choice, before volunteering to enter the fray.

I assume you are referring to Iraq?

If so, it is neither "illegal" or "immoral", so refusing to fight based upon these 2 blatantly false characterizations of the war is not "guts", but a refusal to obey a legal order - an offense against the UCMJ that should result in a court-martial and other-than-honorable discharge.

If I felt I were really needed I would volunteer to go there and fight! Right now I am 45 with a family to support, not the prime choice for a warrior.
I do see the war as necessary, as moral as any war, and the casualties as very very light.
If you would bother to study history just a little, you will find single days of fighting in WW2 where 60,000+ Americans died. We loose more Americans due to murders in our larger city's every year here in the USA then our military looses from every Branch of the service.
We are able to win this war, it will be long. I would rather see it fought overseas in the home town of our enemies then in our back yard.

The War is NOT illegal. that is Fact and not to be disputed.

Immoral you can dispute. that is subject to debate and opinion.

I don't think it is Immoral to free Iraqi's from a horrible dictator.
I dont think its immoral to allow Iraqi's the right to vote for themselves.
I dont think it is immoral to help rebuild their nation after Saddam ran it into the ground
I dont think it is immoral to fight against those who want to turn Iraq backwards from all the progress they have made.

Apparently you think the Rights and freedoms you enjoy as an American, belong exclusively to Americans and others are not allowed to have them.

Apparently you think Saddam was a great leader who had every right to torture and murder people for his own pleasure

Apparently you think Iraqi's do not have the right to decide their own fate.

It doesnt take guts to be a coward and not fight.
It DOES take guts to put on the uniform of your country and defend her (or other countries as your country asks)
especially when the world opinion of idiots are against you.

Your political opinions are irrelevant to the question of whether or not something is legal or moral.

In order to be 'illegal' there must be a clause in the US Constitution or an existing 'on the books' US law forbidding it.

Or do you think that your political opinions supersede the US Constitution?

When you join the military you agree to follow orders and you don't have a say where you do or don't want to go. You sign a legally binding contract that says the US government owns you, and can send you anywhere they want, regardless of whether you think it is wrong or not.

If you want to retain your right to refuse to go to war, don't join the military. That's what the military is for.

Anyone in the military now is a volunteer. So, if they refuse to fight, they are a coward and not deserving to wear their uniform. If you volunteer to serve in the military, you are saying that you will do your duty, regardless of your personal feelings. We all know this when we enlist. Anyone currently in the military refusing to fight is a coward and unworty of being called a soldier/airmen/sailor or marine.
