(Headshot, mugshot, beach shot, work shot, full body, goofy, webcam, glamour shots) The specific picture would be for a professional lady in her early forties.

Ideally, you want a few different pictures. You want a nice headshot and also something that shows her body. A lot of fat people post on line ads. If she's not fat, she needs to show this with a photo. She doesn't need to be wearing a bikini, but just something that shows that she's in shape. Glamour shots are not a good idea because they *look* like glamour shots and people know that the real person won't look that good. Take a lot of normal photos and pick the best ones. Pictures of just her are good - no kids or boyfriend or brother or what have you.

I would put up the following:
1) Full body or 3/4 (to just above knees) in something flattering... maybe even sitting at your desk.
2) Headshot (for the "main" pic which becomes the thumbnail in pics) -- against a plain background works best.
3) Something candid- like in the middle of a laugh, doing something you love, etc.

If your camera has auto-timer you can do the pics yourself.
Here's how I've taken self portraits:
1) Set up the room/area. Clear the background except for a chair or stool or whatever. The corner of my bedroom works great for this when I take the pictures down :)
2) Lighting: bounce a floor lamp off the walls. Try to avoid using the overhead lighting because this will create shadows under your eyes.
3) Try different poses, camera angles, etc. A lower angle with posing sort of sideways into the camera is very flattering to most figures (it will make your legs look really long).
4) Edit the photos, slightly. I use picasa for basic lighting adjustments and cropping. It's a free program.

From personal experience, I would NOT put up glamourous shots unless you want to attract men seeking casual encounters and get a ton of stupid emails.... a low cut blouse is fine, and so is a short skirt - but not both together unless you want that sort of attention. It really bites that things are that way and that men too often don't understand or appreciate a woman posing/dressing sexy as an expression of herself (and not wanting anything more than to feel good and sexy)....

If you don't have autotimer on your camera, you can set up your room the same way and have a friend take pics of you.

... or splurge on a professional package from a "real" photographer... but I would try doing it yourself first- you might just be surprised :-)

beach photos or other scenery you are looking at the palm trees or the motorcycle. I think close ups are the best. Also the clearer the better. Mine is blurry and I hear about it.
